I remember after President Reagan took over after Jimmy Castro, that October we got a good size pay raise, jump pay went up, and I made SSG all in the same pay check.

Everyone loves Reagan but forgets it was his administration that pushed millions of dollars into the mujahideen. Smart move.
At the time, it was. Not all of them transformed into the Taliban. The real problem was that the Arabs didn’t want their foreign fighters back at the end of the Soviet occupation.
Different era, it was the cold war and Soviet Russia was the real threat, not Muslims
Hindsights always 20/20… If you were a kid in the 70’s, early 80’s? The USSR was the WORST enemy ever!
Not to mention that a lot of those who didn’t turn were part of the reason we had our initial successes in Afghanistan, precisely because we supported them.
It’s idiotic to try to imply that helping the people who were fighting the Russians … we could have in any way have known what would happen decades later.
And Colonel Aaron Bank trained a young Ho Chi Mihn to fight the French and recommended to Truman we side with him long before the Vietnam War. And the list goes on, creating a narrative of blame without temporal context just proves a lack of historical perspective, I’m sure things would be different if those people had properly functioning magic eight balls back when they took those actions.

Holy crap, is that something you guys eat in the military? I just thought it was something my, er, economically challenged parents came up with. To this day it’s one of my favorite things to eat.
Wow. I didn’t notice that was President Regan. Do we even have cooks in the military anymore? Besides on an underway ship. It seems like it’s all civilians in the chow halls, and tray rats in the field.
Yes, there are still cooks in the Army.

That’s more of a nightmare.
Reagan, right or wrong, would have been one of the first guys to oppose a military coup. I don’t think that would have been consistent with his view of America – and he seemed to represent our citizens pretty accurately.
He was never a guy you agreed with a 100%, but he almost always got the big things right. Brass balls on that guy – Reagan went from evil empire talk to negotiating away a majority of the ready nuclear weapons in two terms not as a pussy, but from a position of strength. Burned into my memory is him walking next to Soviet Premier in the Icelandic night as the absolute victor of the Cold War.
Thanks to all who stood on the line during the Cold War. No single man won the war, but Reagan represents what a mostly confident, occasionally humble America could do.
And that guy does look like Matt Damon, only BDU manly.

Unlike today when the military is a photo op for politicians, one never had to question Reagan’s love for those in uniform.
