Ranger Up has their new Rough Rider Roosevelt T-Shirt available for pre-order. An amazing American, Theodore Roosevelt accomplishments fill an encyclopedia and takes his place among my favorite Presidents. Ranger Up has chosen one of his most iconic images as Colonel of the US Volunteers during the Spanish American War for the front and emblazoned a few factoids for the uninformed emblazoned on the back.

Teddy was an amazing man, but he was also a HUGE racist…. so perhaps this t shirt is missing a great line like…. “classic bigot” or “blacks were not for Teddy” or “Teddy preferred whites” ??

    just some thoughts.

I am kind of surprised at that comment. Granted, he is said to have held prevailing ‘white man’s burden’ views of his time but President Roosevelt regularly dined with blacks, which was quite scandalous for his time. He was more progressive than most and would probably be considered a ‘RINO’ by the standards of today’s Republican party.

If we look at the man in the context of his time, I’d judge him as a progressive. And, if he were alive today, he would most likely hold differing views. If we hold all of our forefathers by today’s standards then we can’t begin to admire any of them. As you know, many of the framers held slaves.

Perhaps by this standard we can’t hold any President up for admiration until Truman integrated the US military. Or perhaps it’s Johnson’s support of the civil rights movement that finally meets the standard. Or, President Obama? Seeing how he is the first President of African descent?

I could not agree with everything Teddy did as a President, but he was a man who stood on what he believed, not what some poll said he should.
He is one of those people I wish I could go back in time and hang out with because of the man he was, and alll the things he accomplished. Can you imagine the conversation you could have with him over an after dinner cigar?

As to admiring any President, you’ll never please everyone. They have all done something stupid, none of them have perfect lives. There are few that have such interesting histories as Teddy.

Now, addressing the t-shirt, I think that’s a cool design, honoring a man who accomplished a great deal. I like it.

Sorry, but nowadays there is no context where “rough rider” doesn’t sound gay. Especially with “had mustache” and a “big stick.”

There are many ways to justify racist behavior.. including “man of his time” “in the context of time” Henry Ford used to give his Jewish neighbor a new car every year, nice guy right? Ford was also the first person to internationally spread Jew hatred through the widely consumed book “The International Jew” that was sometimes co-labeled with the nazi party.. And of course Ford was Hitler’s “biggest inspiration” so you can easily say that a man can be a hero, role model and a huge racist all in one! Hitler and Ford are great examples of this, but its very important to know this, recognize it and be aware.. NOT snuff it to the side and say “that’s how things were”. General Motors wholly owned German subsidiary OPEL manufactured trucks for the Nazis throughout the Second World War… GM will give you a song and dance about their trucks helping to win the war….while they were also packing in enormous profits selling Opel’s to Hitler….BOTH sides, myopia is always unacceptable in the historic context..

    • SSD says:

Ok, so now you’re comparing Teddy Roosevelt to Hitler. I was willing to entertain your point but you’ve skipped like four or five levels of banter and gone right for the inevitable end of every Internet argument. Poor form.

      • .308 says:

not really… I guess its hard for some people to fully understand the point.

        • V says:

Dude, I get your point. Although I would like to refrain from calling you an assclown, I can’t. Your point is that you have an opinion and regardless of whether is a bit skewed, you are not satisfied unless everyone agrees with your views.
See the thing is, most of us are perfectly okay with skewed opinions as long as the holder of said opinion is not opposed to others holding conflicting views. I think your perfectly entitled to have expressed it above. The editor expressed his conflicting view and rather than take it for what it was, you crossed a line and got all ridiculous because you couldn’t handle someone not agreeing.
I agree, poor form, but at the end of the day, your cheese has slid off your cracker and you remain an assclown.

    • SSD says:

      Dude, you’re in Canada.

      • .308 says:

        what does that mean?

        • I see what you mean but... says:

It means that if you are a foreigner your opinion on matters ‘Merican have to be put in perspective. The perspective of “we don’t give a fuck.”

Go worry about your shit gun laws.

          • .308 says:

haha that so dumb, not going to touch your perfect display of ignorance. I am not worried about our shit gun laws, there are few things to be worried about in a country like Canada…. our economy and banking system is not failing and leaving the people holding the bill…the last thing I worry about is the inability to own a suppressed full auto sub machine gun, you can worry for me?

  5. walter shumate says:

I’ve been reading about TR the last few years, books both in praise of him and ones that try to take the piss out of him for one thing or another, but the most pressing question for me is whether there are Americans today with this kind of experience and unique ability to get things done. I can’t think of any. I hope there are some in the pipeline, or some that I am not aware of due to the nature of our media… I hope…

  6. killslowly says:

He probably smoked too. He would be booed out of every establishment today, even fined. Ah… the good ole days.

  7. Scott says:

Teddy Roosevelt? Why would anyone (besides communists) want to associate yourself with the founder of the American progressive movement – especially on a T-shirt??? For God’s sake man!

  8. Strike-Hold! says:

    This “discussion” is classic…

  9. V says:

This is the best one I have seen since the RCS thread where things got out of hand. Next someone will accuse TR of being a traitor…

  10. SSD says:

    Thanks L for this one…

Teddy Roosevelt, a Man for All Seasons

“now Teddy (and by association, ALL Progressives) was a proto-communist, a racist and proto-nazi, and a gay icon as well.”

    • Mike says:

I also read that he fought dogs, beat children and sold women for profit. It was in a book.
