Viking Laws

I ran this awhile back and when I as recently doing a search on SSD ran across it again. Sure, it came off of a Marinejegerkommandoen Tshirt, but it’s still pretty cool.

Be brave and aggressive
Be direct
Grab all opportunities. Use varying methods of attack
Be versatile and agile
Attack one target at a time
Don’t plan everything in detail
Use top quality weapons

Be prepared
Keep weapons in good condition
Keep in shape
Find good battle comrades
Agree on important points
Choose one chief

Be a good merchant
Find out what the market needs
Don’t make promises that you can’t keep
Don’t demand overpayment
Arrange things so that you can return

Keep the camp in order
Keep things tidy and organized
Arrange enjoyable activities which strengthen the group
Make sure everyone does useful work
Consult all members of the group for advice

    I still recall some of the leadership principles that we had to memorize in PLDC. A few of my favorites as First Sergeant was: “Keep your soldiers informed”. The best way to squash rumors is to tell the troops the truth up front. They will respect you so much more in the long run, as the truth always comes out at some point down the road. Another timeless principle was “Set the example”. The troops notice the leaders that scam out of Physical Training, or are absent from the field. I made it a point to give Company PT, to include singing the cadence for the whole run. In my last few years, as my spinal conditions from parachute injuries caught up to me, this became very difficult. But, I could still look myself in the eye every morning when I shaved. I often wondered how some leaders could face themselves, after their disgraceful actions. Different molds, I suspect.

    I received a t-shirt with these laws as a gift from some of the Norwegian Army soldiers I served with in Afghanistan.

    I’ve had T-shirt since I was a teen!
    It has to be somewhere in the closet…
