Oh the Irony…

20121223-124321.jpg

I’m a big fan of irony so I thought that this would be something worth sharing with our readers. In their haste to make a point about “high capacity magazines” NBC violated the District of Columbia’s ban on such magazines. Hopefully, someone in LE who supports the rule of law will enforce this ban and arrest “Meet The Press” host David Gregory for his wanton disregard for DC’s rules. Maybe then, the press will bother to learn what the laws actually are before commenting on them.

would a citizens arrest be posible?

  2. A says:

FREEDOM OF THE PRESS! FREEDOM OF THE PRESS!

  3. Mr. European says:

In his defence, is that mag his property?
Would “possess” be interpreted here as “holding, handling” or “grasping”? Or are we sticking to the definition of “having ownership”?
If it IS his magazine, then it’s clear-cut, but can anyone prove if it is his?

I’m gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and posit that they brought in “an outside expert,” whether it be a law enforcement official or someone from outside of D.C..

Of course this is the only exposure I have to this issue, so I don’t know the context here. Did he state he went to a gun-shop and purchased/loaned/rented that item?

    • SSD says:

Possession in US law does not equal ownership. Just the act of having it on your person.

    • J.R. says:

So if I go out and steal a car and get busted by the cops, I wont be arrested because the car isn’t my property to begin with????

      • Pete says:

WTF dude? Seriously? Ok we’ll play your game. In your world you won’t get arrest for stealing a car, just possessing stolen property.

    • Ken says:

Possession requires two things, 1. Knowledge 2. Constructive Control. He certainly had both however I would not hold my breath waiting for him to be prosecuted as the story went to further an agenda very popular in Washington D.C.

  4. Mr. J says:

The show is tapped in VA not DC.

    • SSD says:

Interesting. I wonder where you got that information. NBC continues to state that it is produced in DC. VA remains land of the free and even more ironically, he can have that magazine and more here.

      • Mr. J says:

Let’s pose it’s a question the…. Does the show tap in VA just outside of DC and if so would he be in violation of any law?

        • Dan says:

I have meet the producers on multiple occasions and they still shoot at WRC 4’s studio in DC, WRC 4 shares the space with NBC corperate for their DC operations.

  5. Orly? says:

    Its not air soft?

    • Orly? says:

Seriously, you gotta prove to me that’s not an airsoft magazine.

      • SSD says:

Actually, we don’t. And either does he. But, I’ll throw this one at you. He presented it as a 30 round magazine. Go try and sell some oregano to an LEO telling him it’s pot and then try to wiggle out of it once you are arrested.

      • Padawan says:

It’s not an airsoft magazine. You can see the real feed lips, and there’s no nozzle for the bbs to come out, like there would be on an electric gun magazine, nor are there bb feed lips like gas magazines have.

  6. JB Gleason says:

Reminds of the female reporter in AZ reporting on illegal entries to the US that went out in the desert and crossed back and forth between Mexico and the US several times on camera. Thus committing the federal crime of Illegal Entry by not utilizing a Port of Entry and not immediately presenting herself to an Officer for an inspection. But,hey, they are the press and that First Amendment is absolute while they are campaigning to dissolve the Second.

  7. I have connections to “People” and asked them to take action….

  8. George says:

The studio for NBC (along with Cspan and Fox) in DC is 400 N Capitol Street, Washington D.C.

He (and whoever brought it into the city) clearly was violating Federal law and should be prosecuted.

  9. JT says:

Really …. the debate has digress to this??? Here’s 86 words I read I can’t give back… Ohhhhh Gregory!!! I’m going to tell on you!!! You were a bad boy today!!! Let’s keep our focus on the real issues…

    • Lawrence says:

JT – this IS part of the effin issue.

      • JT says:

No Lawrence, the Effin take away is a 30 minute interview in which our boy Wayne held his own against David “Effin” Gregory and didn’t waiver once on the NRA’s stance on protecting the 2d Amendment …. And you had the another NRA board member Grover Norquist doing the same on ABC…

But no, it’s wanted posters, zip codes & citizen arrests…

Thanks Wayne & Grover for stepping into the proverbial lions dens today to protect my 2d amendment rights..

    • SSD says:

This is part of the issue. The press is oblivious to what the gun laws actually are and need a wake up call as to how fragmented they are. I can only imagine when someone explains to Mr Gregory that he violated the law by possessing a 30 round magazine, he’ll say to himself, “wow, that prerty stupid. I can’t hurt anyone with this.”

And by the way, I want to be clear on this. You advocate violating the law?

      • JT says:

Do you really think the press is oblivious to this subject? SSD, this is what they are gunning for… at a minimum a nationwide ban on 30 Round Magazines. The fact that David Gregory had show and tell with props this morning made it clear to me. It didn’t to you.? Besides, the prices are going up on these magazines across the land, so there are a lot of other people thinking the same thing. Go ahead SSD, arrest him, make him a martyr… he will draw more attention to this subject. He’ll say that 30 Round Magazines are so dangerous that I was arrested for showing one on TV in the nations capital, why then are they not banned in all 50 states… The Pied Piper plays his flute and the mice will follow…..

        • SSD says:

If he were arrested for this, I’d say that it would have the opposite effect. People would see a man holding a simple, inanimate object and question what was so dangerous about it. Not that it matters.

They aren’t going to arrest this guy. Everyone here knows it. The point was the irony of the situation, which was lost on you. If we can’t point out how ridiculous the anti-gun side is, what’s the point? You are way too worked up over this. Relax.

  10. Oh my, God! What a tool. I will be sharing this.

  11. Jesse says:

It couldn’t possibly be D.C. They are illegal there. Plus where did he manage to snag one at this late hour.

  12. bulldog says:

What a great way to waste time. Cmon SSD get serious!

  13. Jake says:

I couldn’t see any clear evidence of a 10-round block in that mag, and even if it is just the mag body the DC statute outlaws that too (“can be readily converted”). But I expect NBC to come back with something along the lines of “it was not a real magazine it was only a facsimilie/prop” etc etc. And nobody will be able to prove anything.

  14. SSD says:

Maybe this will make all of you fans of Mr Gregory feel better. His moral superiority and all.

  15. Steve says:

Just goes to show that gun laws rarely work against criminals.

  16. straps says:

I have a quarter to bet that the magazine has been through de-mil. What a waste. But the fact of the matter is that he’s supposed to be a journalist, not a prop comic.

Only slightly less idiotic than Piers Morgan’s buffoonery last week.

I don’t agree point for point with either party in the shenanigans televised during the past week, but the job of the journalist is to paint a factual picture. If they want to editorialize, they can allocate the closing minutes of the broadcast and bookend it with disclaimers.

    • SSD says:

Several of the other networks are picking this up with glee. I think they are more than happy over this considering NBC stonewalled everyone else on the Richard Engel hostage issue.

On another note, I’m getting a serious laugh out of the anti-gun crowd’s attempt to downplay this. For some reason that 30 round magazine wasn’t that big of a deal. Felony violation of the law aside. They are having one hell of a time supporting gun laws now aren’t they?

      • D2 says:

This gets more frustrating that so much of this was based on the false assertion by the “fact finding” media that a rifle was involved in the massacre. Add that to false suspect info and other negligent stements. Just crazy inept and unprofessional
