Father-Son Team Demonstrates Simple Optical Cloaking of Large Objects

The hell with the US Army Camouflage Improvement Effort. They’ve spent millions of dollars and taken years to field nothing. On the other hand this father and son team at the University of Rochester have successfully cloaked a kid!

John Howell, a Professor of Physics at the University of Rochester and his 14-year-old son Benjamin conducted this feat with off-the-shelf items.

Thanks CC!

Let’s give the money the Army has already wasted to this guy… even 1/10 of it would certainly get us a heck of a lot further down the road…

Cutest thing I’ve ever seen on SSN.

Use monies from tax payers like myself to put towards a system that works. Im sure we have men and women that can figure out how he did this. Two different directions when coming to thought of what is needed. Is this one feild capable? How much training at user’s level is needed? Just stop and look at it with different eyes.
    Thank you.

They use mirrors, off to the side in the video. Quantum Stealth does not use mirrors. http://www.hyperstealth.com/Quantum-Stealth/index.html

I want to know how. That’s really neat!

  6. Eric says:

Top Gear did this on the James Bond car special (albeit much rougher edges). Cameras and monitors lashed to a van.

  7. Guy Cramer says:

The mirror you are looking at is on an angle to reflect the mirror off the the right. The smaller boy is right behind the first mirror so he is not being picked up. Once you stand back you get picked up by the mirrors off to the right and reflected in the main mirror.

    • Old Goat Patrol says:

Plus it is a long lens shot so you can not tell the difference when the taller boy is standing back at the wall or right behind the mirror.

  8. Guy Cramer says:

Move the camera left or right a few feet and you lose the effect.

magicians have been doing that for years and years and years.
it’s not even smoke and mirrors, just mirrors. Heck, you can see the clamp.

It’s fun. It’s educational. It’s kids and their dad. Read the paper.
