    The original M 16 flash hider had this type of arrangement (open end) and it was found that it would get caught on small branches. They put a ring around the end to eliminate this from happening.

      And this works VERY well. Afghanistan ain’t Viet Nam. There have been no complaints that I know of about this style of flash hider catching on vegetation. Some of this may also be attributed to the shorter barrel of the carbine.
