President Roosevelt called December 7th, 1941, “A date which will live in infamy.”
This is the 73rd anniversary of the Japanese attack on the US fleet at Pearl Harbor. We no longer even hold ceremonies commemorating that day. Last year I made the argument that, “Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.” This year, I just want to remember my grandparents and everything they sacrificed to keep America free.
I’d also like to take a moment of silence for the 2402 Americans who were lost on that day and the hundreds more who were wounded in service to this great Nation.
Although I am Canadian and the first time I heard these words(as a young man attending grade school), FDR’s words haunt me to this day. A huge disappointment for me this Remembrance day when my IBM co-workers couldn’t/wouldn’t take two minutes out their LIVES(paid for in-full by people like my father and grandfather) to pay homage to those who gave some and to those who gave all. For my co-workers, I am utterly ashamed – for those veterans who made it possible for all of us to not be speaking German or Japanese in this day and age, I am so proud. “Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.” – TOO RIGHT, MATE!!! To those who genuinely espouse “loving their country and remembering those who helped make it free”(Canada, UK & US), remember to reach out and thank a Veteran – every day and not just Remembrance day. A very big THANK YOU to SSD for this anniversary post.
It’s a shame that this day goes unnoticed each year. It fundamentally changed America and her allies forever. I’m afraid the only way it would gain traction now is if the Kardashians made it into a hashtag. I look at the flag everyday when I put my top on. I wonder what that flag still means to the average American and if they know a tenth of the history behind it.
God Bless the Greatest Generation! Those brave men and women faced and defeated evil…
The real tragedy is that this was avoidable. FDR and the administration provoked the Japanese AND knew of the pending attack. Good bless the service members that still serve despite people like these and our current leaders.
Taylor,
FDR “provoked” the Japanese? Really? Do you know anything about history? Ask the Chinese who were already 2 years into a genocidal war with invading Japanese. Ask a Korean.
Of course you could also ask a Pole about what happened in 1939. FDR provoked WW II. Bullshit!
And finally, do me a favor and take your long debunked conspiracy theory and shove it back under your tin foil hat…as hard as you can.
I think I’ll go throw up now.

Correction: actually Japan invaded China (July 1937) over 4 years before Pearl Harbor.
What’s wrong Terry ? Can’t handle the truth ?
DAN III,
The truth I can handle just fine. Conspiracy wing nuts make me sick.
But I have learned that it is a waste of time to try to reason with people who have the conspiracy fetish.
So if you are one of the wing nuts – as you appear proud to be – I have no interest in wasting my time with you.
Have a nice day.

+1!
Well said Terry B.
(facepalm) – Oh for f*cks sake…
Rus….you the same type as Terry B ?
Nice to know someone else is smart enough to learn the history of this country. Think of the head explosion if I told them we put the communists in power in China…
Those who forget history… are doomed to repeat it.
