SOMA – Dustoff Medical

Every 18D makes his own Articulating Splint during the Q Course. Most, never see it again once the get to their ODA. Former 1st Group medic, Zak A took the concept and developed the Suspected Orthopedic Fracture Splint or SOF Splint.

Zack built the splint he wanted to use. It’s highly adaptable and can be applied to a wide number of orthopedic injuries. He sees it as a lighter alternative to other options. Made in the USA by SOTech and comes with a PALS compatible carrying case.

I’m assuming this thing can get pretty compact, but any specific dimensions?

  2. paul says:

I assume it’ll fit into the mesh portion of the M9 aid bag just like the homemade one.

  3. Invictus says:

Is this like a stronger, bigger, and more durable SAM splint?

    • Zak says:

Not at all. The SAM splint is great for wrists and ankles. This splint is made by all SEAL, SF, Ranger and some Marine medics in their SOF med training course at Ft. Bragg. The splint is for arms and legs, but this device comes with a dist cover that can also act as a sling, or an ankle brace. Basically all your orthopedic immobilization, in one device.with the oragami SAM splints require.

        Interesting. Thanks for the response.

In looking at this with a backcountry eye, it seems as though it could be used as a framesheet replacement in an ultralight pack. Are the two halves separable?

        • Zak says:

Invictus, no the two halves are not separable, but you can use it folded up the same way you could use half of the device. We built it to last, and making it separable would decrease the integrity of the device, right where we need it the most.

  4. AZHUMINT says:

Not super obvious colors are nice, but does a split really need to be in multicam?

    • Zak says:

Multicam is what the operators requested. S.O. Tech manufactures the splint, so if you want one in coyote brown, olive drab, or hot pink, we can do that for you.
