American Rifle Company – Mausingfield Bolt Action

The Mausingfield Action from American Rifle Company debuted at last year’s SHOT Show and immediately caught the attention of precision shooting circles. I’m always impressed with the development of very specialized equipment based on requirements, particularly when the inventor builds something based on his own needs. When Caylen Wojcik of Magpul Dynamics told me about (ok, that is his version of raving about it) the Mausingfield, I knew that I needed to spread the word to my readers. Although it may never achieve wide stream recognition, the Mausingfield is certainly something that should become well known in the Sniper and tactical competition communities.

This is probably this simplest description of the Mausingfield to get you started.

Remington 700 footprint with a Mauser ejector, an ’03 Springfield extractor, and American Rifle’s toroidal bolt lugs.

Together, they form one helluva combination that has been picked up over the past year by several custom rifle builders.

I’ve spoken with Theodore Karagias, President of the Seattle-based American Rifle Company, Inc. and he told me that he developed the Mausingfield action to be the most effective rifle action available for use in extreme conditions. He fully admits that the Mausingfield isn’t for everyone. It’s a very specialized device for very specialized applications. Think, snow, ice, mud, sand and you’ll get the picture.

“If I could have bought a rifle that I considered to be both properly designed and well executed, I would not have designed my own. Adoptable, battle-proven ideas are my favorites. If those are not available, I must invent. That’s how the Mausingfield happened.”
-Ted Karagias

Karagias took a look at what was available and eventually his thoughts got to what he had used as a kid; the Mauser. Very effective, it just needed some adapting. A combination of old and new, the Mausingfield integrates some features that shooters are accustomed to and reintroduces proven, yet out-of-fashion elements along with some engineering and the latest materials.

He set to work within the footprint of a Remington 700 because so many excellent stocks and accessories were already out there. The Mausingfield action is compatible with Remington 700 triggers, trigger guards, chassis, and stocks. The action is also compatible with proven Savage barrels rather than some proprietary, new design. Karagias worked for many years in the aerospace field and brought his experience with materials to bear as well. He also decided to utilize two lugs in order to enhance the “feeling” of the shooter as he chambers a round.

Here are a few of the features of the Mausingfield Action:
-Interchangeable bolt heads support multi-caliber rifles
-Toroidal bolt lugs do not require lapping
-Battle-proven Mauser 98 claw extractor
-Battle-proven M1903 Springfield inertial ejector
-Secure and interchangeable interlocking rail interface
-Ergonomically designed bolt knob
-Compatible with Alpha and Accuracy International CS magazines
-Compatible with Savage barrels and locknuts
-Integral recoil lug

I’ve been hands on with one of these and it is simply amazing. I thought the Surgeon had the “feel” but these are outstanding.

So it doesn’t use the R700 safety? That’s a plus if so. Might have to look deeper into this action.
