We Just Celebrated SSD’s 13th Anniversary

Sunday, May 23rd, 2021

Soldier Systems Daily; it all started with a redeye flight from San Diego to Norfolk and a copy of Wired magazine. I had wanted to start writing again and there was this article on the rivalry between tech blogs Gizmodo and Endgadget. I learned that a blog could be about something tangible and decided to use the format. Not long after, SSD was born. It started as a means to keep me off the streets at night, but within a year became a full time job. I’m so grateful to be able to do something I love.

Earlier this week we hit our 13th year of existence, publishing a daily website. Naturally, hard at work publishing daily, we missed the anniversary. So here we are, patting ourselves on the back a few days late.

We’ve been fortunate to outlast most of the competition and the past 14 months of “just 14 days to flatten the curve,” have made it tough. But the truth is, we wouldn’t exist without our loyal readers and fantastic advertisers. Many of them are small business owners, feeling the pinch of these tough times like everyone else. Please support them when you get a chance and keep reading; daily, it’s in the name.

Last Chance! Win an AKM Build Class with Rifle Dynamics and GunMag Warehouse

Friday, April 30th, 2021

April 30 is the last day you can enter to win an all-expense-paid AKM build class with Rifle Dynamics at their HQ in Las Vegas, courtesy of GunMag Warehouse.

The winner of the contest will be announced on 05/01/2021.

Gunmag Warehouse and Rifle Dynamics have teamed up for the biggest giveaway of the year! One lucky winner will enjoy the opportunity to build their own AK, dive into the history of the Kalashnikov, handle different AK platforms, and keep their own custom-built AK afterward (shipped via an FFL of course).

This giveaway will cover the cost of the trip, class fees (firearm included), food, room, and board.

And while there can only be one first-place winner, fear not as there are chances to win other incredible prizes: second and third place winners will be laden with 30-round “Mag Lads” magazines from Rifle Dynamics and Bulgarian AK magazines (the reinforced steel lug polymer mags) from GMW.

Enter online here; learn more about the contest here on The Mag Life.

And hey — if this is the kind of thing that butters your biscuits, you might also find it worth the time to check out GMW’s ever-broadening AKM/AK47 gift guide for Kalashnophiles.

Fort Bragg Warfighter 21 – ESS Crossblade Spectacle

Friday, March 12th, 2021

ESS developed the Crossblade Spectacle to offer a more form fitting frame style with thinner ear pieces which fit under over-the-ear hearing protection.

There are clear and smoke grey lenses and the NARO lens and nosepiece sizes fit narrower faces which helps mitigate fogging experienced when too large lenses are worn. The lenses and nose pieces are interchangeable for a more custom fit.

The lenses feature ClearZone Dual Flow coating to eliminate fog inside and prevent scratches outside. They also conform to Federal OSHA, ANSI Z87.1-2015, CE EN 166 and U.S. MIL-PRF-32432A standards.

The Crossblade and Crossblade NARO are on the US Army Authorized Protective Eyewear List and are RX compatible.

Units and agencies can procure ESS products by contacting Atlantic Diving Supply.

Help Bree Jordan Fight Breast Cancer

Sunday, February 28th, 2021

Bree Johnson is the wife of an RCMP officer who is fighting for her life. Facing metastatic breast cancer, this wife and mother’s only hope for survival is a new treatment here in the United States.

Cancer doesn’t care where you live and every promising treatment isn’t covered by every insurance. Any one of us could end up facing similar circumstances. This family is willing to do what it takes to save her life. Support that effort if you can.

Let’s focus on positivity. Please don’t use this tragedy to further political agendas on this platform. The family doesn’t deserve it.

The Mute – A New Nonmetallic, Baffleless Suppressor, Controls Thermal Mirage

Friday, February 26th, 2021

The Mute is a new nonmetallic suppressor offering self-thermal regulation via the Thermal Shroud feature which the manufacturer claims reduces heat, mirage, muzzle rise, felt recoil, and sound compared to an unsuppressed firearm.

Manufactured from a proprietary polymer material called D28, The Mute features unibody construction.

As the projectile travels through The Mute, gases are focused out the front vent, bringing cool air in from the rear. The more rounds you fire the more air is cycled through, allowing The Mute to cool faster via the Venturi effect. They have measured 109 degrees outside temperature after a 30 round mag dump. Cool enough to touch.

At launch The Mute is available in .22, 9mm, .223/5.56, with .45, and .30 cal coming soon.

The D28 material also saved weight. The .223 variant wraiths 11.4 oz, the 9mm is 6 oz and the .22 version is a scant 2.5 oz.

The Mute comes with a 1/2×28 thread pattern flash hider.

The Mute Suppressor’s initial price $599; after May 31st price is expected to be $799.
