Freeze drying is the best way to preserve foods and Mountain House is the master. Every OR they offer samples of their new flavors. I tried the low sodium New Orleans Style Rice with Shrimp & Ham. The taste is excellent and it is slightly spicy with under 300mg per serving. Look for it and two other new low sodium meals early next year.

    You are correct about quality at lower altitudes. But the water at 5,000 feet starts to be too cool for proper constitution. I have found that at 10,000 feet and above, the result is a runny unappetizing mess. Anything over 8,000 feet and you are better off with the main course from a genuine MRE. Sure, you are hauling the weight of the water up the mountain but I have found the reward worth the effort.
