AUSA – Gerber Weapon Light

Yesterday, we briefly introduced you to 6 new products from Gerber. Now, we will give you a more in depth look at each one starting with the Weapon Light.

Incorporating a Larue QD mount, the Gerber Weapon Light incorporates three settings; On, Momentary On and Momentary Strobe selectable via the tailcap switch or a remote tape switch. Powered by 2 CR123 batteries, it throws 250 Lumens for 2.3 hours and is waterproof to 1 meter. The light has a Tan 499 coating and features an IR filter / Dust Cover. Made in USA, look for it early next year.

I may be naive in assuming that it is an LED light, however to get that output with that run time there, is almost no other way. If it is an LED, that IR filter would not serve much use, since LEDs do not produce significant output in the IR spectrum. White-LEDs don’t produce IR light in that wavelength, so the IR filter essentially acts as a blackout filter. This is why SF developed the Vampire series of lights/heads. If the light is an incandescent, then they’re just using fragile and outdated technology which will not be capable of the output/runtime they claim.

I making a lot of assumptions which is never a good thing, and I might end up putting my foot in my mouth. Gerber has put out many great products in the past, so perhaps they have some ground breaking tech in this light. Maybe a dual spectrum LED of some sort? Maybe they have found a way to downsize HID tech? Either way, I hope they have indeed found a way to accomplish all the specs they claim the light to have, as it will be an asset to our modern war-fighters.

That looks to be a flip down IR filter. Worked for years with another company. Big issue here is price. What is it?
