Softshell Tech – Sphinx Giveaway

This is the second of four articles sponsored by Arc’teryx LEAF to educate readers on softshell fabrics used in their garments. In the last article we covered Tweave, a product of Gehring Textiles. What better way to learn about how Arc’teryx combines world class design and materials like Tweave Durastretch and Durastretch LT than to actually wear them? So, this time we are going to give away a set of Sphinx Halfshell and Pant.

The Sphinx Halfshell combines both weights of Tweave Durastretch. It is an armor compatible design that features articulated arms with roll up sleeves that stow for a short-sleeve option. A mandarin collar and bicep pockets top this technical version of a combat shirt off. The Sphinx pant also features softshell construction and an articulated fit for comfort and mobility. These pants are designed to be worn over the top of hiking and mountaineering boots so they incorporate an internal gaiter. The Sphinx pant also includes a knife/tool loop as well as an ingenious reinforced knee construction with an internal pocket for hardshell kneepads which allows you to still use the kneepads’ straps for added stability.

For your chance to win, in the comments section of this posting on SSD, tell us what product you’d like to see Arc’teryx develop. Use your real email address to enter because that is how you will be contacted in case you win. You posting may have to be approved so be patient of it doesn’t show right up. Only one entry per email address. The contest closes at 1200 GMT, 27 April, 2012. At that point, SSD will randomly draw a winner from the entries. We will then pass the name and email address of the winner to the Arc’teryx LEAF team and they will contact the winner and arrange shipment.

Boots, a plate carrier, weapons sling, Multicam BAC!

  3. Steven says:

I pretty new to Arc’teryx, but I love their designs and would love to the wolf series expand for more civilian/ccw wear.

  4. juan franco says:

Certainly LEAF Arc’teryx products are top of the range, it would be nice to witness to Him! 😉

  5. Jack Murphy says:

Low-Vis, Low-Profile clothing and gear for urban operations.

  6. Jeff says:

How about some low profile elbow pads using the same materials as the LEAF knee pads with just the minimum amount of hard shell material in key locations.

  7. Thomas says:

A Arc’terx quality plate carrier is an excellent idea. Concealed carry clothing with a “civilian” look is what I am hoping for.

  8. Michael says:

I’d love to see Arc’Teryx’s take on a boonie hat.

  9. BjørnNO says:

Love the civ. clothes they make, but tactical gear? hmmm, interesting!

  10. Kris says:

I would like to see Arc’teryx develop medium size backpack. Possibly 25-30 L, in Green or Camo, molly capable, modular in the way that give extra space for caring helmet etc by releasing backless held panel, with hydration pocket and well designed shoulder straps and low profile hip belt. Light ~500D Cord. or similar. Softer pocket for goggles would be nice but not crucial.

  11. Edward says:

    Footwear.

  12. Clay says:

    some light weight assault packs

  13. Peter says:

I think try should make combat boots. With their use of various materials and innovative designs a pair of light weight duty boots would be awesome.

  14. Jeff Jones says:

I would like to see these products available in some other camo patterns as well as some boots and gloves

  15. Kelly says:

Boots, waterproof boots, hot weather boots. I hate when my feet are wet.

  16. Dylan says:

I’d like to see some more designs dedicated to edc wear. Perhaps some low profile stuff that doesn’t look overly “tacticool” but still has all the goodies that would normally be there.

    Thanks for the opportunity!!

  17. D.Joseph says:

A durable, weather resistant range bag, perhaps with a reinforced bottom.

  18. Randy Mendoza says:

More than anything, I would love to see Arcteryx manufacturing brought to the United States. Without question, the kit that is made is of an already tremendous quality. I do believe that quality only hurts once and therefore can see the cost associated with this gear, but what gets me is that $1K for 2 pieces of gear is a lot to pay for something not even made in the U.S.A. Not everyone is a Costa, Haley or Defoor and as a regular civilian I want to see a “Made in the USA” tag on gear I buy. A USA made product of the quality like Arcteryx be it LEAF or civilian serves to justify the price for the product.

    • Brian says:

I think Acrcteryx is based out of Canada.

I would rather see made in Canada than in Asia but as an American I agree made in the USA would be best.

  19. Scott says:

I’ve lived every piece of Arc’teryx gear I’ve owned. This would be a nice addition for hunting.

  20. Marc Kennis says:

More urban environment clothing that comes in different camo coloration’s and is light weight and very breathable for (running, hiking, climbing, and even being submerged in water). An all around animal of a jacket that can do it all and blend the person wearing it in as zn average civilian.

  21. Steven says:

A unique and specialy designed boonie hat for civilian/urban enviroments.

  22. Brian says:

Plate carrier, low-profile, high mobility and super durable urban wear.

  23. Nate says:

Urban tactical gear that is not to flashy.

  24. Patrick O'Neill says:

I’ll like to see it in other colors and or camouflage patterns. And it would be nice if the y incorporated built-in elbow and knee pads.

  25. Daggertx says:

FR gloves with reinforced knuckles and cut/stab resistant Superfabric front and back.
Also covert pants and shirt with loads of options for load carrying that don’t restrict athletic and dynamic movements.

  26. Marc says:

A cheaper more affordable jacket that doesn’t take a few pay checks to purchase it. Although it is well worth the money, i feel a more affordable jacket will not only be beneficial to the consumer but it will bring a ton of revenue to Arc’Teryx

  27. Jonas says:

Combat shirt with softshell arms and a hood

  28. Phil says:

    Boonie (water-resistant)
    Beanie in Croc and Wolf
bring out their new rucksack in Multicam, Croc and Wolf
Sphinx version with hood like the Gryphon
looser cut pants (Gryphon, Sphinx, Talos)
    longer arms on the Talos
    Military colored rainshells for backpacks
    Multicam and Wolf BAC
Croc and Wolf colored base layers (Phase)
    use of printed Velcro
all gloves in Croc and Wolf
    Assault Pack
    Duffels and Gearbags

  29. Ben says:

I’d like to see some plate carriers and chest rigs. Footwear for different terrains and weather conditions would be awesome too (as long as they include larger sizes, like 15+).

  30. Thom Hyde says:

“Tactical” Stetson style hats for sheriff’s deputies made out of modern materials, so they are more durable and appropriate for winter/summer. These can be worn in uniform and fit uniform colors (green, tan, or brown), or are made to look like currently produced Stetson hats in appearance. Water resistant, UV resistant, and with a form fitting and sweat wicking headband to keep the hat on your head and the sweat out of your eyes.

  31. Jeff says:

I would like to see more offerings for concealed carry that don’t look tactical or in any way official. Discretion is the better part of valor, and when you are wearing the same gear that your local plainclothes LEO wears it doesn’t exactly scream discrete.

  32. beautech says:

I would like to see some more accessories like socks, hats, and maybe even some MOLLE kit.

  33. Dave says:

Great looking apparel. With a reputation for great quality. Everyday where in everyday colors so you don’t stand out in a crowd.

  34. Jo Bar says:

I would like to an expansion in smaller, lightweight packs and pack systems as well as a few more awesome warm weather clothing options, gear for heavy load bearing and plate carrier compatibility over long hauls, with moisture wicking and heat regulation.

  35. Tony says:

Would like to see more and difrent camp patterns.

  36. Brett says:

I would like Arc’teryx develop long pants that have some sort of ventilation at the backs of the knees and, if possible, at the crotch. Obviously, the crotch vents would be difficult as you don’t want to be revealing, but those 2 types of vents (back of knee and crotch) would help keep the wearer cool. The back of the knee vents could be zippered for opening and closing, and the other vents could be like some sort of mesh. Alternatively, the crotch vents could be some kind of circular grommet that has a backing slightly set off from the fabric, so that air can go through but there would be no clear line of sight through the pants (for obvious reasons). Plus, lets be honest, it would give all the SOF guys lots of opportunities for clever puns–just think about it: crotch vents. OK? Anyways, back of the knee vents would be great if you were wearing knee pads.

  37. Zak says:

A lightweight baseball style cap that incorporates some of the new features we are seeing in your combat shirts and soft shells.

More urban wear that still has tactical features but remains covert enough to not attract attention.

  38. Mark says:

I hunt, climb, and run and gun, so I would love to see a lightweight beanie style hat that is both waterproof and breathable. I’d like to see it in a variety of color options too to be applicable to all situations (realtree, multi-cam, black, etc)

  39. Chuck says:

    Sniper anorak/ghillie platform.

  40. Matt says:

I would love to see a LEAF 3 day assault pack.

Also if your asking 🙂 – An super ultralight shell on the LEAF side & a Battle Belt like the Viking Tactics Brokos Belt

  41. Kevin says:

Clothing for hot/warm weather for urban concealed carry.

  42. Jim says:

I’d like to see reversible gear, where one side is urban concealment (like Wolf) and the other side is urban casual (like colorful NorthFace jackets).

  43. Whokka says:

Goretex/ soft shell boonie… To take on the crye boonie… And so you never need to put your hood up!

  44. Giovanni Velazquez says:

I would really like to see more color selection, maybe a light weight mesh type combat shirt for really hot weather.

  45. Dave B. says:

Tactical gloves would be great, I also agree with the other comments of Urban tactical with a conceal carry mindset.

  46. Chris C says:

I’d like to see combat uniforms that are not soft shell. For example, combat shirts and pants like those of Cryye or Massif. Different types like flame resistant and non FR would be awesome. I’d love to see Arc’teryx’s take on these ever popular growing uniforms. Comfort and functionality would be the two paramount features in my opinion. Also, maybe add a built in harness repelling system or hookup.

  47. Slopes says:

I would like to see packs, including the ILBE available again. Also, a patch with the bird would be sweet.

  48. sevy says:

    boots and plate carriers !

  49. MF'nLeadFarmer says:

I would love gloves with CF knuckles just like the Oakleys I wear. I love these gloves but feel as though the quality is lacking (especially in the plam). Perhaps an index (trigger) finger that could fold back? I would also like more wrist support maybe like supports found on weight lifting gloves. I would like these gloves to be made for shooters! Other gloves feel like baseball batting gloves with knuckle protection. I would like gloves made specifically with the shooter in mind. Lastly maybe these gloves could be used as a Thinsulate mitten?

  50. Andy says:

Aircrew FR line…either coveralls or 2 piece flighsuits & outergarments
