Softshell Tech – Sphinx Giveaway

This is the second of four articles sponsored by Arc’teryx LEAF to educate readers on softshell fabrics used in their garments. In the last article we covered Tweave, a product of Gehring Textiles. What better way to learn about how Arc’teryx combines world class design and materials like Tweave Durastretch and Durastretch LT than to actually wear them? So, this time we are going to give away a set of Sphinx Halfshell and Pant.

The Sphinx Halfshell combines both weights of Tweave Durastretch. It is an armor compatible design that features articulated arms with roll up sleeves that stow for a short-sleeve option. A mandarin collar and bicep pockets top this technical version of a combat shirt off. The Sphinx pant also features softshell construction and an articulated fit for comfort and mobility. These pants are designed to be worn over the top of hiking and mountaineering boots so they incorporate an internal gaiter. The Sphinx pant also includes a knife/tool loop as well as an ingenious reinforced knee construction with an internal pocket for hardshell kneepads which allows you to still use the kneepads’ straps for added stability.

For your chance to win, in the comments section of this posting on SSD, tell us what product you’d like to see Arc’teryx develop. Use your real email address to enter because that is how you will be contacted in case you win. You posting may have to be approved so be patient of it doesn’t show right up. Only one entry per email address. The contest closes at 1200 GMT, 27 April, 2012. At that point, SSD will randomly draw a winner from the entries. We will then pass the name and email address of the winner to the Arc’teryx LEAF team and they will contact the winner and arrange shipment.

Boots and a low profile/weight plate carrier utilizing a similar thought process that brought us the brilliance of the H-150 Riggers Belt.

  2. C Boone says:

Knee pads built into pants low pro. Army specific camo patterns. Pant sizes specific to waist n inseam

  3. Austin says:

High quality LEAF jackets and pants that do no scream “military”.

  4. Mike says:

Hot weather light weight multicam trousers and long sleve mulit cam shitrts.

    Chest rig/Plate carriers

  5. Justin says:

I would like to see the expansion of the entire LEAF line. To include more color options aside from the tans and multi cam they are primarily available in now. Foliage green across the line for example.

As said before, also more “urban” products that maintain the performance but are suitable for daily wear (plain clothes LE for example).

  6. eva05 says:

Not in it for the win, but the dirty bird needs some fucking packs. A compact hip pack for concealed carry and some basic essentials (light, mag, phoenix jr, multi-tool) and a 27L assault pack with some internal organization capability!!

  7. That One Guy says:

Backpack, boots, and more tactical civilian wear.

  8. Jake says:

I would like to see a take on a 1 man shelter/bivy combo. It would need to be lightweight (of course) and simple to put into operation (think middle of the night in torrential downpour following a 10 km movement). Go lean on the frills (interor pockets, etc.) but solid construction (minimum seams) and low profile. Multicam, Croc and Wolf are good starting colors but whenever the Army decides on a new pattern it would be nice to see that option available as well.

  9. Mark says:

Lightweight, durable, waterproof, multi-purpose pack. 1 to 2 day pack that has removable gear attachments that can be configured for mountaineering and tactical applications.

  10. Taz says:

I like the boots idea, really most of the ideas are good. But also how about some covers (caps, boonie, beanie, etc.) with logos from Costa Ludus and HSP.

  11. Carl says:

    Concealed carry based clothing.

  12. NGCSUGrad says:

    Low profile armor carrier

  13. John W says:

Pants version suited to urban daily use. Include two small side hip pockets just below belt line to slip in my EDC folder and weapon light.

  14. Ed P. says:

Light weight LEAF jacket and gear bags!!

  15. Scott says:

I’d like to see concealed carry wear, chest rigs, med sized packs and Hunting wear.

  16. Hannu says:

    Lightweight BDU-styled pants.

  17. Derrick says:

Making their clothes a bit more affordable. Also I would like to see their take on a tactical rappelling harness.

  18. Andy says:

    Shorts!

  19. Paul T. says:

More camouflage patterns and/or solid color options. The features in this kit would be great for hunters as well as operators.

Solid color options would be fantastic for this product. Camouflage makes one blend in when in the woods or when surrounded by like-dressed individuals, but has the opposite effect when you’re the only dude wearing it.

Also, high-quality, low-profile weapon cases and bags, or an internal frame backpack with an integrated rifle storage solution, for the tactically-minded survivalist.

  20. Brian W says:

A hooded Wolf grey VEST similar to the Naga hoody, maybe a little more loose fitting. Preferable made with some Merino wool so campfires don’t eat it up.

  21. Aeain says:

I would like the see more affordable clothing.

  22. Wheeler says:

Concealed carry focused clothing. And some shirt – they do great civilian shirt so making a military-oriented version would be great.

  23. Cameron says:

Id like to see a battle belt with straps to make it in to a climbing harness like the c-toms one.

  24. erick says:

    Jackets in low profile colors (not necessarily Mil) and appearance cut to wear over concealed weapons;
    Talos tops and bottoms in more “traditional” tactical cop colors;

  25. Boneguru says:

You have no vests, they make a great layer option for core temp management, as well as for areas with dramatic temp changes during the day cycle. Thanks, R

  26. Mike says:

Pants that have a integrated system to retain a molle belt. Preventing pants from sliding out from movement.

  27. david says:

Id like to see some mil spec stuff for each branch, it would be nice to have pants and tops that last and are comfortable.

  28. Colin says:

The LEAF series in ranger green and other, lower-profile colors, suitable for daily wear.

  29. Alex says:

Love my Combat Jacket but would really like to it to be slightly more tailored. Maybe it’s because I’m 5-10 and only 135lbs but I would love for the jacket to have a slightly closer to the body fit.

  30. Gonzalo says:

Softshell and hardshell jackets with 2 way zip (to leave the jacket closed but can unzip from below to have access to belt, gun, accessories).

Also models that do not scream military, but more for concealment, in other colors like urban wolf.

  31. Ben says:

Quality all weather boots -waterproof with a removable insulation layer.

  32. David Zhang says:

I’d love to see some Asian fit clothing. Being an individual of east oriental descent I’d like to find something great that fits since it’s so difficult to find the right sizing. If you guys at Arc’teryx do that then you would be the only company out there that I’m aware of doing this. The only other company doing Asian sizing is Revision but that’s with eye protection.

    -David Z.

  33. Lawrence Monroe says:

A line of footwear/socks would be nifty. Solid colors would be and added bonus.

  34. Gerry says:

Yes please, consider looking into the ultralight scene. A Arcteryx cuben fiber pack and tent would be awesome!

  35. tony le says:

Clothing in “low-profile” colors and schemes.

  36. James says:

I would definitely say boots. Everyone out there is making camo guns and camo clothing, but as of yet, only Danner is making decent boots in the most contemporary camo patterns (ATACS, Multi-C, etc.). Boots, man! Boots!

  37. Larry says:

More color/pattern selection – there are some great products, I just wish they’d have a green variation.

    CCW friendly cuts/clothing designs.

I’d also really like to see more pack designs – they helped design the USMC ILBE, a more advanced design like that would be nice.

  38. Tyler says:

I would like to see more civilian based colors in the LEAF department (such as the new wolf color) in a variety of already existing products.

Also, a discreet looking (grey man) messenger bag built for the purposes of carrying a concealed weapon while still looking classy!

  39. Tom says:

A low profile, light weight plate carrier. Usable with a cumberbund and without.

  40. Anthony Salvatore says:

Would like to see and expanded line of Naga hoodie like items using different weight fleece. Maybe a heavy and light weight version including FDE, multicam, ATACS, etc color options. Would like to see LEAF fleece beanies as well……keep up the great job!

  41. Matt C says:

I would like to see more affordable products. Fantastic products, just not when you’re on a budget.

  42. Adam says:

wicking combat shirts for wear in hot weather. Keep sun off your arms, store stuff in shoulder pockets, smooth body section for wear under armor vests that keeps you cool.

  43. Marshall says:

I think clothing that is extremely CCW focused. Something like a pair of jeans that have a interior waist band for greater comfort of holsters and sizing that hides a gun well. Also, tops that are simple, made from natural fabrics that can complement the pants ability to conceal.

  44. Ian Quaranta says:

I would love for all of your LEAF items to be available in Black too. Not all are, and in LE we NEED the black color. (Alpha LT, etc)

  45. Bryce W says:

    Concealed Carry oriented clothing

  46. Bill says:

Would like to see a lightweight low profile plate carrier compatible with their Alpha jackets or worn under other garments.

  47. Carey says:

Ruggedized civilian style pants, but without the glaring cargo pockets. Gussetted, reinforced at the knee, maybe the ass, maybe with the larger “operator style” slash rear pockets.

Or maybe just a well-thought-out messenger bag, without overly military stylization. Something you could take from the office to the gun range, without being out of place in either.

  48. Nick says:

Any high quality jackets or concealed carry wear in some urban color schemes. More for off duty/under cover LEO.

  49. Andy says:

I’d like to see hardshell jacket – something between Alpha and Alpha Parka, cause Alpha is too short for me and Parka too long… Or some cutted jacket like Alpha LT from your undestructible XCR GTX shell.

And more packs! Some replacement for Tango and Charlie!

  50. Preston says:

I would like to see their products in more camouflage patterns. Cheaper prices would definitely be good too.
