Softshell Tech – Sphinx Giveaway

This is the second of four articles sponsored by Arc’teryx LEAF to educate readers on softshell fabrics used in their garments. In the last article we covered Tweave, a product of Gehring Textiles. What better way to learn about how Arc’teryx combines world class design and materials like Tweave Durastretch and Durastretch LT than to actually wear them? So, this time we are going to give away a set of Sphinx Halfshell and Pant.

The Sphinx Halfshell combines both weights of Tweave Durastretch. It is an armor compatible design that features articulated arms with roll up sleeves that stow for a short-sleeve option. A mandarin collar and bicep pockets top this technical version of a combat shirt off. The Sphinx pant also features softshell construction and an articulated fit for comfort and mobility. These pants are designed to be worn over the top of hiking and mountaineering boots so they incorporate an internal gaiter. The Sphinx pant also includes a knife/tool loop as well as an ingenious reinforced knee construction with an internal pocket for hardshell kneepads which allows you to still use the kneepads’ straps for added stability.

For your chance to win, in the comments section of this posting on SSD, tell us what product you’d like to see Arc’teryx develop. Use your real email address to enter because that is how you will be contacted in case you win. You posting may have to be approved so be patient of it doesn’t show right up. Only one entry per email address. The contest closes at 1200 GMT, 27 April, 2012. At that point, SSD will randomly draw a winner from the entries. We will then pass the name and email address of the winner to the Arc’teryx LEAF team and they will contact the winner and arrange shipment.

I would love to see (and purchase) a LEAF civilian CCW line of light- & mid- weight jackets made to mil-spec quality and design but without frills, specifically Velcro patches. For some of us who can’t always utilize wardrobe modifications for CCW, outerwear is one of the few ways we can CCW. Two colors already in production that easily cross over to civilian applications are black and wolf.

  2. Bob says:

CCW for hot weather civilian casual

  3. Ty Redden says:

I would like to see more tactical gear besides just pads. I think Arc’teryx could do well if they developed some nylon load carrying vest and other modular gear.

  4. Gil Porter says:

it may sound stupid but a car cover that can turn nearly any car or light truck a tactical blind for surveillance in seconds. maybe reversible with camo on one side and black on the other

  5. Andrew says:

    boots would be nice

  6. Brian says:

I would like to see more ‘Grey Man’ Items (read Wolf) and some Hot weather designs.

  7. hut says:

    ottimo vest

  8. Shane says:

It’s already been said several times but definitely more ranger green and wolf color in the line up.

  9. Firewalker says:

I’d love to see Arc’teryx LEAF develop armor carriers featuring some of their classic design elements. They have an excellent knowledge of clothing, but I think they could go really far if they applied their ingenuity and out of the box thinking to armor systems. Thinner, lighter and more durable.

  10. James says:

I’d like to see a new harness with adjustable rise like the metolius safe-tec stuff, pants with longer available inseams, and jackets that are longer in the sleeves and body. basically some stuff for all us tall gangly bastards. oh, and hats in XXL sizes, or even XL, that one size fits all stuff only fits pinheads.

  11. Nathalie says:

If anything, coming from a female fan, I’d like to see an expansion of the LEAF women’s line. Possibly something that’s light, weather-resistant, but not insulated. (The weather in the tropics suck – hot, humid, and it rains all the time! Without warning!!) I also really like the Wolf color. Bonus if it comes in that color!

  12. Josh says:

IMO Arcteryx could expand into a covert / civilian tactical line up, ie more subtle colours like the new wolf gray. Also removal of velcro patch areas etc. and maybe even CCW capabilites. I really like their quality but their LEAF products are too military for day-to-day life while I’m not too fond of their regular line, just too sporty.

  13. Tye says:

Great Products, this one is attractive. It’s difficult to find a way to improve this product. If my input counted for anything I would suggest zip arm pit vents. I have found those handy in my own experience.

  15. Connor says:

How about adjustable waist straps like the old old BDUs have. Freaking love those things….gets rid of the need for a belt

  16. yahir says:

I would love to see a battle belt

  17. Eric says:

I would like to see Arc’teryx develope a line of products in the LEAF line more toward LE and everyday wear. I have a combat shirt and Alpha Jacket that are great but i could do without the velcro patches on the sleeves.

  18. Tristan says:

I would like to see them branch into nylon gear!

  19. George says:

A covert carry case for a rifle along the lines of the guitar looking carrying case that used to be sold at the LWRC store.

  20. Socrates Maroudis says:

I would like for Arc’Teryx to use some LEAF colors in their sport line of outer wear. I really don’t like the yellow, red, and turquoise colors. I think a lot of people buy LEAF for the color scheme.

  21. Brad Hopper says:

I would love some light weight shooters gloves with hard knuckles.

  22. Songyang says:

A non-insulated jacket same style as combat or drac but just without velcro on arms and doesn’t scream ‘tactical’! big fan of large usable shoulder pockets but the gamma from civilian line don’t always have them

Would definitely love to see more packs from LEAF line. 20-30 litre assault pack or 3 day packs around 35-40 litres (It’s a shame that the Charlie pack was discontinued)

more colour options for Talo pants

also, some dead bird patches or stickers would be nice 🙂

  23. Will says:

I would like to see a line for more active civilian users. Maybe come out with more civilian colors. It would also be cool to incorporate like others have said CCW features into the clothing.

  24. John says:

I would like to see more grey man products.

  25. John says:

I would like to see more grey man products. 2

  26. L. Six says:

I would like to see some mid-weight CCW long sleeve tops, preferably in non-“look-at-me-carry-this-hand-howitzer” colors…black, gray, etc

  27. Chris Freeman says:

Every day concealment clothing for warm climes would be way too cool…

  28. Chris says:

Some more clothing in colors that I could wear as a law enforcement officer. Design some of those great jackets with a way to mount my badge and have reflective patterns seen in as I’m required to wear, and some pants I could wear off duty or at a plain clothes extra job.

  29. Jason says:

How about Pants with a Molle system, and a holster system to fit that, and maybe other accesories such as knife sheath or mag pouch to fit this system? I love cargo pockets and stuff them but sometimes need to be organized with placement of gear and do not want to wear a plate carrier that has molle’s or a pack. I also would like calf socks with a velcro pouch near the top of them it is convenient not carrying a wallet, for your eon boxer could you make a seperate style that would fit a cup since they now make a titanium sport cup…..if it helps with ied’s i’d love it!! Thank’s Love your products and alway’s will!!

  30. Rob in Cali says:

Jacket with the ability to hold mags on the inside. That would be sick for deep concealment.

  31. Idahoman says:

Some sort of hat with an integrated sweatband.

  32. Devon says:

    Low-Mid footwear for rugged conditions

  33. Jake says:

I would definitely like to see some lightweight tactical boots come out of Arc’teryx.

  34. Anthony says:

I would like to see a lightweight assault style Gillie with the ability to be hidden in a pocket along the upper back of a shirt, jacket, etc. This would give the user the ability to go from less camo to heavy camo in a matter of seconds.

  35. Tim says:

    Anything CCW, and boots.

  36. Jeremy says:

I would love to see a heavyweight denim jacket w/ flannel lining, a corduroy collar, and inside pockets

  37. Clint says:

Arc’teryx LEAF “Flight Suit” or similar type of one-piece coverall; hybrid softshell and hardshell construction, with Gryphon-esque roll-up sleeves, calf and bicep pockets, etc – suitable for flight line or ground forces work. Make it available in Wolf, Crocodile, Black, and Multicam.

  38. Ahlgren says:

    Updated combatpack

    More gear in od

Bigger dufflebag with room for platecarrier

Range bag that CSN be carried as à backpack

  39. Load bearing gear!

  40. Matt says:

I would love to see a plate carrier

  41. Paul says:

Low profile EDC pack, breathable boonie, hot weather grey man shirt.

  42. Andy says:

I would like to see gloves

  43. Vince says:

Discreet plate carriers, street orientated jackets and shirts, with shoulder pockets for EDC use. CCW orientated street wear. Definitely more “gray man” items. I’m retired, my operating days are over, but if I have need to armor up for a perceived threat eviroment, would like less obvious options.

  44. Michael says:

I would really love to see some warm weather CCW gear done right.

  45. Phil Hagoes says:

One thing that is missing in the combat clothing line is a high quality Tactical Anorak. It would do the following things.
1-Be a modular system with intergral fleece jacket, which is removable.
2-Lightweight and durable fabric with reinforced stress points.
3-Removable back and shoulder panels for “Field” camo attachement points. Think field vs urban ops.
As an operator in extreme desert conditions ranging from high wind, extreme cold, and extreme sunny hot conditions, protection from the elements is a top priority. This is a daily issue, as an unprotected body parts are either fried, frozen, or sand blasted.
Thanks for the opportunity to provide input. I also design tactical gear, so if you are interested, please contact me at any time.

  46. awset7 says:

Much like everyone else, I’d like to see more civilian/tactical.

  47. Vince G says:

As a fan of Arc’teryx’s technical clothing designs, I fall into that category of “type A” personalities that need adrenaline dumps to survive the day. As such a person, when not working the day job, I dabble in a little bit of extreme motorsports. One of the products that I feel would be promising in the return on investment end would be a motorsports oriented technical clothing line. This line would have to be protective in nature and accommodate the flexibility and durability necessary for hard riders of dirt and sportbikes to excell and in there respective sport. Arc’tery has the ability to design cutting edge apparel that can inspire the confidence of a rider to reach new heights and push past plateaus of safety engineering. Sounds like an advertisement, doesn’t it? SSD, pass it on!

  48. Kilo1 says:

I’d love to see an entry level priced pair of pants.

  49. Steven says:

Would like to see more civilian/tactical stuff, especially for the CHL area and Law Enforcement.

  50. Jasper says:

A light, quality, button down shirt for storage and concealment.
