Softshell Tech – Sphinx Giveaway

This is the second of four articles sponsored by Arc’teryx LEAF to educate readers on softshell fabrics used in their garments. In the last article we covered Tweave, a product of Gehring Textiles. What better way to learn about how Arc’teryx combines world class design and materials like Tweave Durastretch and Durastretch LT than to actually wear them? So, this time we are going to give away a set of Sphinx Halfshell and Pant.

The Sphinx Halfshell combines both weights of Tweave Durastretch. It is an armor compatible design that features articulated arms with roll up sleeves that stow for a short-sleeve option. A mandarin collar and bicep pockets top this technical version of a combat shirt off. The Sphinx pant also features softshell construction and an articulated fit for comfort and mobility. These pants are designed to be worn over the top of hiking and mountaineering boots so they incorporate an internal gaiter. The Sphinx pant also includes a knife/tool loop as well as an ingenious reinforced knee construction with an internal pocket for hardshell kneepads which allows you to still use the kneepads’ straps for added stability.

For your chance to win, in the comments section of this posting on SSD, tell us what product you’d like to see Arc’teryx develop. Use your real email address to enter because that is how you will be contacted in case you win. You posting may have to be approved so be patient of it doesn’t show right up. Only one entry per email address. The contest closes at 1200 GMT, 27 April, 2012. At that point, SSD will randomly draw a winner from the entries. We will then pass the name and email address of the winner to the Arc’teryx LEAF team and they will contact the winner and arrange shipment.

There are some good products in the civilian Arcteryx line that would be nice to see in the LEAF line crocodile and Multicam.
I use the Arrakis 40 as a combat daypack, I have sprayed it tan.
This is a great versatile, comfortable and waterproof pack with a lot of different possibilities. The ski carry can be used for a shooting mat, dry sack etc..
One of my other all time favorites that I have been wanting in Crocodile color for years is the Gamma AR pants. This pant is just great for everything that is not in the middle of summer. Right now I use the Drac pants but the Gamma AR would be a bit more low profile and simple. Would be nice with belt loops for the H150 for this in Mil version.

Lastly I use the Wraith jacket as an emergency jacket in my Go bag, this is nice but it would be even better if you where to produce a Gore-Tex Paclite version of the same jacket for better protection.

  2. Tim says:

I would like to see you develope a pant that has four rows of Molly webbing around the thigh area, all the way around the leg. This could afford you a spot to attach pouches, etc. without the need to rely on moving, uncomfortable, and limited space drop leg platforms.

  3. justind says:

I would like to see the entire line in ODG camo!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. mike says:

bring back the covert hoody and give it some leaf colors and technology. I would love love love a wolf covert hoody made from some kind of tweave/softshell material that would shed water while keeping you warm and blending!

  5. Jorge says:

Good to know about this contest!

I wish I could get the prize.

Re my answer to the question what product I would like to see Arc’teryx develop maybe some kind of multipurpose poncho liner would be great. I guess that would be Multicam, with pouches, with hood, water repellent treated, …

  6. Doug E. Doug says:

What draw’s me to arc’teryx is the discrete look of most of the clothing. Roll this design style into making an honest-to-god discrete bag for carrying small carbines. There are too many “discrete” rifle bags that scream “Gun!” on the market, and are completely useless. I’m sure y’all could figure out something to meet that goal while avoiding the pitfalls.

I’d like to see some footwear built around heavy, extended use, but are more than comfortable enough to go for a run in. That would be my end-all be-all shoe.

I’d also like to see some solution for getting some hands on experience with your clothing before buying. Hundreds of dollars in clothing, while justifiable when the product is good, is a hard leap of faith without any prior experience.

  7. Jim E. says:

I think the US Military as a whole could use an Arc’teryx combat uniform that actually works. Breathable, durable and comfortable to wear. The Army is going to pick its next generation camo pattern soon, why no team with Arc’teryx to actually put it on a uniform that fits well and functions the way it should. Price would be the only thing I think that would prevent this idea from becoming reality. If military and Arc’teryx could join forces and reduce the cost to an affordable point, they could sell millions of pieces and make the war fighter even just a bit more lethal, an not look at with pity by other nations šŸ™‚ Yea we know ACU sucks! we get it now stop laughing!!! Multicam is awesome and I pray the powers that be, don’t fall on their sword a second time with the next pattern down select.

  8. jiminyt says:

This one’s easy. Arc’teryx makes great packs. I would like to see them apply their expertise to a 3 day assault pack.

  9. Ben says:

I’d like to see some gloves that provided both insulation and protection on one item… That’d be sweet.

  10. Sean Martin says:

I would like to see their version of a water resistant poncho liner. One side like the Atom LT material and the other a water resistant material with the ability to stretch around a person.

  11. Rich says:

I’d like to see Arc’Teryx designed bdu/acu style uniforms for those of us that have to wear a more traditional, combat/tactical uniform. The uniform would feature Arc’s solid construction with their special touches.

  12. Monty says:

I’d like to see the LT Hoody in Coyote and/or MC. Also a SS Multicam technical T-Shirt.

  13. Will says:

    Gaiters and waistpack/lumbar pack

  14. Corbin says:

I’d like to see some form of daypack for EDC that doesn’t scream “i carry a gun”. Organized pockets would be great as well as waterproof materials in more traditional colors than tactical

  15. Isaac says:

Gloves…something that provides warmth w/out total loss of dexterity.

  16. Wurzelbert says:

Something I’d like to see developed is some kind of rain shirt (hard- and/or soft-shell), which you can wear as a layer above your body-armor or pc. It should be divided into an upper an lower section so you can wear it in three different ways: As a total cover above your gear (maybe with an option to reach trought the front part, to grip your most essential gear), as a cover for your exposed upper body (arms, shoulders,…), but your pouches remain uncoverd and as the same way, but underneath your armor; well and stand-alone as your rain-jacket.
It should be constructed in a way, that the lower half fits under the upper one (so rain can’t come through), but it shouldn’t use zippers; velcro loops or maybe a cord release might be more durable and less obstructive.

  17. Tim says:

Some pants like the spotter with leaf features. Cotton canvas blend or nylon cotton blend.

  18. Brent says:

I’d like to see a poncho from The Bird. That and maybe a set of Tactician gloves with a trigger finger cutout with some kind of close fit glove finger on the inside.

  19. Porter says:

Bivy/sleep system would be great. Light weight pants and shirts designed for extremely hot environments.

  20. JJ says:

The most important for me personally, is better sizing options for the pants. Being in between sizes, to snug or too large just doesn’t cut it. We also really need longer lengths (like yesterday). Next I would say share the love with the Fire/EMS folks. To just pawn us off to the civi line falls short in my opinion. Especially for those of us who support tactical teams and aren’t deemed worthy. The market is there and we will be there for you. Lastly, don’t forget the ladies. They deserve the best quality gear just like the rest of us. Thanks for everything you do.

  21. Shell says:

I have to agree with JJ’s comment above. Please share some love with Fire/EMS and all us ladies who really love your products and the features they offer.

  22. Alexander N says:

I’d like to see shells without pit zips and some fleece outerwear pieces. Also, a way to see products first-hand would be awesome, it’s difficult to make an expensive purchase when you don’t even know if the item fits. Maybe free return shipping from dealers like some places do with boots. Most importantly, though, I’d like to see smaller sizing. An extra small in tops would be wonderful. And for smaller sizing on pants, leg openings and inseams should be scaled rather than identical across the board like most brands.

  23. Mike says:

I’d like to see a low profile work pant made of a heavy cotton/canvas type material.

  24. justin says:

I would love to see more of the lineup in black/wolf colors. Being a LEO now, and doing less army stuff, I need more in uniform friendly colors.

  25. tom says:

Iā€™d like to see some form of daypack for EDC

  26. Cheyenne Boone says:

Pant sizes. Ima 32×34 large doesnt always cut it. Lets see some more patterns Army specific.

  27. David says:

I’d love to see a slimlined backpacks… Like the Blade but with some MOLLE

  28. Nate says:

I’d like to see a 3 day assault pack, where the entire inside is lined with molle webbing. I’d also like to see a pack similar to what Eberlestock is doing (backpack with some sort of scabbard).

  29. Jon says:

More discrete hoodies and pants that utilize the Wolf scheme. Preferably something like a hybrid between the new Drac Jacket and the Naga hoodie.

  30. Tyler says:

A every day carry pack of some type. Along the lines of 2000CU IN and lots of interior organization

  31. Joe Simmons says:

I would like to see a quick front opening to pants, for when you have to go to the bathroom really bad. Gross, I know. But it happens and would be needed, I think.

  32. LB says:

Some type of medium sized, MOLLE compatible pack.

  33. Jonah says:

I think a line of garments intended for super hot/jungle climates would be a great next step for Arc’teryx.

  34. Thomas says:

I’d like to see a nice black polo style shirt with a pen pocket on the sleeves.

  35. Cramer says:

I like how discrete the line is.

    1) More stuff in the Wolf color!
    2) and please, please, please expand the line to fit us full figure guys (i.e. 52″ & larger chests)!

  36. Tiffany says:

I would love to see this in a wider array of camo patterns! Thanks!

  37. Marc Carpenter says:

I would like to see a complete system: no scent, warm, breathes, water resistant and repels ticks. Start from boxers and cover everything on the body up to a ghilli suit.

  38. Andy says:

I’d like to see Arc’teryx Antaeus finaly for purchase! šŸ™‚ And some another 3day assault pack too.
For your clothing series – you could do more sizing options, for example medium-long jackets and trousers etc.

  39. Joe says:

I’d like to see more colors avalible. I like the cammo, but all black or blue, or white for that matter would be nice.

  40. stephen stephenson says:

I think an assault pack integrated with a hydration system in all available colors.

  41. Howard says:

I would love to see the LEAF designs in more civilian friendly layouts. Same materials, same thought, same designs, but in a modular workable system for civilian use as casual or work environments. Even day to day. I feel that a lot of the tech and materials that go into the LEAF would be well worth it and workable in normal day to day wear or the job site.

  42. Jeremy says:

Would love to see the axios bag get a LEAF update, or any small to medium size pack.

  43. Daniel says:

I’d like them to create a less expensive line of clothing. Their products are all top quality, and are made of very durable, comfortable material which I know costs them a lot to make. Yet, many people cannot afford to purchase their clothing frequently due to the high cost.

  44. Matt says:

    I’d like a drac with a hood!

  45. Eric says:

    two words… ghillie suits

  46. Lukus says:

I’d like the covert hoodie brought back and them team up with the Military to give me something better then these damn ACUs. Those are top as well as making a decent pack I can wear on campus for EDC that holds all my stuff like a 3 day but that doesn’t look like I’m trying to go out for a ruck with all the extra straps and shit I keep finding on other packs.

  47. Travis says:

I’d like to see a daypack in more urban colors.

  48. Barbie says:

Do they make pants to put knee pads in them? My husband wears tactical pants with knee pads in them.

  49. Kris says:

I agree with Jonah, i’d like to see some more hot weather short sleeve and long sleeve options. Also a line of more casual blend but still durable pants. Something you can dress up or down and still climb mountains and run through deserts in.

  50. Dalton says:

I’d like to see a more traditional hoodie but with “tactical” features. Low pro
elbow pads built into the sleeves.

A traditional kangaroo pocket but with some sort of attachment features built inside maybe molle or velcro maybe a reinforcement system so the front doesn’t sag if carrying a load in the pocket.

This could have a lot of crossover between urban operations and mountain ops. It’s also a lot more low profile styling than more modern “hoodie” systems which scream gun.
