Softshell Tech – Sphinx Giveaway

This is the second of four articles sponsored by Arc’teryx LEAF to educate readers on softshell fabrics used in their garments. In the last article we covered Tweave, a product of Gehring Textiles. What better way to learn about how Arc’teryx combines world class design and materials like Tweave Durastretch and Durastretch LT than to actually wear them? So, this time we are going to give away a set of Sphinx Halfshell and Pant.

The Sphinx Halfshell combines both weights of Tweave Durastretch. It is an armor compatible design that features articulated arms with roll up sleeves that stow for a short-sleeve option. A mandarin collar and bicep pockets top this technical version of a combat shirt off. The Sphinx pant also features softshell construction and an articulated fit for comfort and mobility. These pants are designed to be worn over the top of hiking and mountaineering boots so they incorporate an internal gaiter. The Sphinx pant also includes a knife/tool loop as well as an ingenious reinforced knee construction with an internal pocket for hardshell kneepads which allows you to still use the kneepads’ straps for added stability.

For your chance to win, in the comments section of this posting on SSD, tell us what product you’d like to see Arc’teryx develop. Use your real email address to enter because that is how you will be contacted in case you win. You posting may have to be approved so be patient of it doesn’t show right up. Only one entry per email address. The contest closes at 1200 GMT, 27 April, 2012. At that point, SSD will randomly draw a winner from the entries. We will then pass the name and email address of the winner to the Arc’teryx LEAF team and they will contact the winner and arrange shipment.

    Laptop/messenger bag.

  2. Robert says:

Have use your products for mountaineering since your inception! Just continue what you are doing by listening to the end user of your product! And you will create what is needed! One suggestion would be a vest to compliment your Sphinx halfshell when not wearing body armor!

  3. Steve says:

I’m all for a reversible poncho that can double as a bivouac. Maybe multicam on one side and a subdued digital or marine woodland digital on the reverse.

  4. Ben says:

    A warm weather shooting glove.

  5. Brendan says:

I would like to see some quality foot wear.

Some type of woodland camo on the current jackets for hunting would also be something I’d be interested in.

  6. J Dave Rusk says:

    I’d like to see a T

  7. Clayton says:

I’d would really appreciated the Dually Belay Parka with a waist cinch and in combat and hi-vis colours.

  8. James says:

I’d like to see a 3-day-sized pack based on the larger Echo.

  9. Gwilym says:

I love the Arc design style. Simplistic yet functional, minimalist but all the features try include in there products are ones you use. I love there jackets and pants but I’d like to see a pack made around the style of a center zip duffle. You would have the center zip behind you back but on either side of the zip would be back supporting foam with a airgap along the zip. I’d like the side facing away from to be completely slick with the exception of Molle webbing so you can attach the necessaries. On eithet side a 1/3 access zip panel but with opposite heights. Top on left side and bottom on right. With a Velcro flap to keep the zip slick and covered. Scinch down straps and possibly a shovel slot. Lots of shoulder and waist band modularity so it can fit just about anyone. Size wise it be cool to see it in a 3500 and 5500 but the 5500 would fit the design better. Ultra slick pack. With on trail access and body hugging profile.

  10. Wil says:

Some kind of removable light weight cold weather liner for your pants. 1 pair of pants for 2 seasons.

  11. Chris Smith says:

Love the windbreakers and thermal covers. Lightweight urban covert would be great with more pockets on the arms, for those of us that cover up the torso area with ceramic type materials 😉

  12. john wallet says:

i would like to see a thinly insulated shirt for cold running in wet weather. wicking is a must.

  13. Jaxon says:

Performance socks for hiking and running. Lightweight gaiters. Performance base layers for warmth and comfort on extended trips. Also a shirt, like a standard white v or crew neck shirt that is well fitted for athletic body types but would be a great performance type undershirt for wearing with dress clothes.

  14. Sean Parkinson says:

I would like to see gloves with a pin on the trigger finger to help bypass the stupid bullet button required on California AR platforms. Imagine how quick you could release a mag if you didn’t have to fumble with something to release your mag.

  15. Dev says:

A light weight utility glove and warmer climate discrete shirts like a polo.

  16. John says:

I’d love to see a more casual/dressy pant that could go well with the performance polo line.

I could sure use that sphynx stuff! I guarantee that if you give it to me, I’ll put it to good use!

  17. Annie says:

I would really like to see further development of the women’s line to include jackets and shells that are equivalent to what’s available for guys! currently there is very little for us gals! also would like to see shorts.

  18. Sgt Bear says:

I’d like to see a crossover civilian-military 2-3 day pack. Something low-profile that will work on the streets for daily use, but can also hack it in the backcountry for a few days. Maybe use the Bora platform and size it as a 35-40L pack with some modifications. Would be nice to see a pack in this size with sleeping bag compartment access and a hip belt. Some MOLLE loops on the sides and bottom, would be nice, but not covering the whole pack. The goal would be something to which a few accessories can be attached, but that doesn’t scream “tactical operator right here!”. Offer it in Black, Crocodile and Wolf.

  19. J.J. Jacobs says:

How about a soft shell jacket with some zip off sleeves in old school Olive Drab!

  20. Jeffery says:

I would like to see arcteryx develop a line of eyewear and footwear. Both of these are integral to the shooting lifestyle and I feel arcteryx can bring that same level of quality in their clothing to these markets and succeed.

  21. Dennis says:

A messenger bag, a covert sports coat and eye pro.

  22. Kyle Moffat says:

Other variations on lightweight/waterproof outerwear or a insulating layer much like the Cabelas Trans Alaska puffy jacket, but more rugged…

  23. Christopher says:

I would love to see some sort of low profile scout pack.

  24. Stephen Weddle says:

I’d like to see them make waterproof gloves with better dexterity and more feel.

  25. Oscar says:

I would love too see a pair of really good boots for hot weather together with some high quality socks

  26. Jeremiah says:

Some looser jackets for concealed carry.

  27. Jon-Erik says:

Arc’teryx is all about evolution in action, I’d love to see them improve on already proven designs. The Leaf Alpha jacket is by far the best hardshell I’ve owned, therefore more color options like Wolf or a version which uses GE’s eVent fabric would be nice.

I live in a tropical country, it gets very humid, hot one moment and rainy the next. Perhaps a LT/non-insulated version of a softshell that’s compressible?

And also the Chimera in Wolf.

  28. Carlo says:

I’d like to see move military style packs developed

  29. David Himot says:

Being in the army does not give the best pay but a few of my friends of some of your equipment and I would love to get some. If only. Thanks

  30. jake haun says:

I would like to see more hats.

  31. Vance says:

Would like to see tactical gloves and a wide range of packs (EDC, 3-day mission, etc.) and pouches. Or even a load bearing system of packs/pouches.

  32. Timothy S. Cooper says:

I’d like to see an EDC pack, or 72 hour pack….

    Thanks!

  33. Chucker says:

I’d like to see a smock; any material(s) allowed, clean sheet of paper regarding design.

  34. Jeremy Wilson says:

Lightweight summer clothing that has the durability of the outerwear and Bravo, but allows freedom of movement and holds up to hard use.

  35. jason says:

i would like to see Arcteryx create a quick release plate carrier or a low profile lbv in mutli-cam or marpat coyote . as the comments above say Arcteryx are no strangers to making top of the line clothing, so the next step is to jump into the tatical gear world.

  36. Josh S. says:

    More colors/styles for EDC

  37. Douglas Kraft says:

Id like to see a shoulder holster for large frame autos that secures to the belt on both sides for stability

  38. Matt says:

I would also like to see socks developed. In addition perhaps some additional color options. I love the current color ranges, perhaps it might open up some further marketing possibilities.

  39. Tyler says:

I’d just like to see more color or patterns other than coyote or black.

  40. Jonas Hjorth Andersen says:

It is hard to say, because it is like you are always one step ahead. It would be radical if you would consider footwear and vests. CP’s the best out the but i think you could do better!

  41. Sofie Schou says:

More LEAF in women’s cut! 😉

  42. Jeremiah says:

I love all the Dead Bird gear I have, especially the Combat Jacket, which is the perfect weight for cool days in Arizona. The only thing I would have liked to see is the Rho LTW zip available in a Coyote or a tan color.

  43. Josh says:

I love my combat jacket and I’d love to see a nomex style short combat glove and maybe some more casual wear! Thanks

  44. Jim says:

LIke to see some soft of shell with light/flexible body armor built in. .

  45. mike says:

I would really enjoy a pair of light weight tear resistant pants that durable enough for field use. Weather proof as well. multicam would nice.

  46. Kristopher Vaughn says:

    Some BA Boots!

  47. Anthony H says:

I’d like to see Arc’teryx venture into the armor carrier business. Combine high-tech fabrics with designs that incorporate hard and soft armor.

  48. Tyrone povey says:

I would love to see more sniper gear, drag bag,ops bags, gloves.

  49. Captain Smoof says:

    Something CF related!

  50. Jonas Hjorth Andersen says:

    Footwear and PC’s 🙂
