Softshell Tech – Sphinx Giveaway

This is the second of four articles sponsored by Arc’teryx LEAF to educate readers on softshell fabrics used in their garments. In the last article we covered Tweave, a product of Gehring Textiles. What better way to learn about how Arc’teryx combines world class design and materials like Tweave Durastretch and Durastretch LT than to actually wear them? So, this time we are going to give away a set of Sphinx Halfshell and Pant.

The Sphinx Halfshell combines both weights of Tweave Durastretch. It is an armor compatible design that features articulated arms with roll up sleeves that stow for a short-sleeve option. A mandarin collar and bicep pockets top this technical version of a combat shirt off. The Sphinx pant also features softshell construction and an articulated fit for comfort and mobility. These pants are designed to be worn over the top of hiking and mountaineering boots so they incorporate an internal gaiter. The Sphinx pant also includes a knife/tool loop as well as an ingenious reinforced knee construction with an internal pocket for hardshell kneepads which allows you to still use the kneepads’ straps for added stability.

For your chance to win, in the comments section of this posting on SSD, tell us what product you’d like to see Arc’teryx develop. Use your real email address to enter because that is how you will be contacted in case you win. You posting may have to be approved so be patient of it doesn’t show right up. Only one entry per email address. The contest closes at 1200 GMT, 27 April, 2012. At that point, SSD will randomly draw a winner from the entries. We will then pass the name and email address of the winner to the Arc’teryx LEAF team and they will contact the winner and arrange shipment.

I would like to see more concealed carry clothing that is both waterproof, rugged, and breathable but at the same time comfortable enough to wear on a daily basis. With the number of concealed carry weapon permit holders skyrocketing due to the current administration’s stance on guns, it may be a profitable business to get into.

I would like to see a full line of clothing as well, not just pants or jackets but vests, shirts, dress clothes and maybe even socks.

  2. Damon Johnson says:

I would like to see a waterproof cold weather jacket system that would be lightwieght and comfortable… eliminate bulk. Maybe even with a removable liner for more versatility.

  3. Nicholas Chen says:

Pants with a poo flap like Crye battle pants. How about a lower priced introductory line so I can afford more Arc’teryx

  4. Mojo says:

    More LEAF products in Wolf.

  5. Evan says:

I also like the idea of a small tactical pack. Something with “reach-around” pockets so you can stuff or retrieve items while wearing while wearing the pack.

  6. Kevin says:

I would love to see non-insulated gloves geared towards keeping your hands dry vs keeping them warm. Preferably 5-fingered.

    • Kevin says:

More like a “next to skin” type glove.

    • Kevin says:

Sorry just had another thought (hopefully they are listening), how about a rain fly that also protects a pack from the accumulation of water between the jacket/back and the back of the pack? I’ve had this happen to me too many times.

  7. Nick says:

I’d like to see your same products in some civilian neutral colors.

  8. John says:

    Wolf color in all products!

  9. Emil says:

I’d like to see an SAS style smock in multicam.

  10. chris conner says:

i would like to see a water proof version of this line

  11. kyle says:

I think someone hit the nail on the head when they mentioned an introductory style line that would carry a lighter price tag.

These products are great but if you want to reach a larger consumer base and in turn increase revenue having something along these lines would be awesome.

  12. Norm says:

I am split between a concealed carry soft shell and more items in Wolf. How about a concealed carry garment in Wolf?

  13. Alex says:

I still beleive a budget friendly line would be successful. In this day and age you “get what you pay for” but sometimes a single garment pushing $500 is unattainable. Especially when that only provides you with half of what you need. It would also be interesting to see you develop nylon gear.

  14. Josh W says:

Using their technology, develop police uniforms.

  15. Dan says:

My request is rather simple. I would love to see some more non-military colors or color combinations added to the LEAF line. I personally love the quality associated with the LEAF line of products, but don’t particularly care to go out in public wearing tan, green, black, or grey. For example, I own a Venta SV jacket that is a deep blue/grey combo with bright blue zipper pulls. The jacket does not have the distinct appearance of LEO/.mil/PMC garb. I think adding some new colors that are associated with civilian life will be popular among those who have the need to be discreet in their operations.

    Cheers,
    Dan

  16. Andrew says:

I’d like to see a non-black complement to Wolf that is different enough to wear along with it while still having a similar effect, like Crocodile is with Coyote.

  17. Vic says:

I’d like to see them do a jacket based on the old Field Jacket. Do it updated with maybe some pocket rearrangement, pit zips, and of course material upgrade. Have it heavy enough that it can be a parka if used with a zip out liner (that could be used as a stand alone light jacket/sweater), but light enough that if used alone it would be comfortable in higher temps.

That and like everyone else has already said a lower priced line that GIs and beat cops can actually afford.

  18. Joe says:

Attain desert tan or aor1 in a nyco material and make it in a affordable range ….150.00 pants and 100.00tops would sell very well

  19. Nick says:

As others have said; I would like to see these products available in standard civilian style colors.

  20. Aaron says:

I would like to see socks that blow away anything from Smartwool, but still be affordable to the average consumer. How about a Plate Carrier as well?

  21. Josh Gerstmeyer says:

Would love to see the Alpha LT with the recco system on it. I had to get the sidewinder because of that. No other options for Arcteryx.. Ill tell ya this much when your in the big mountains and lots of snow fall, you need the recco.. Not a big fan of the fit of the sidewinder cuz Im not a skier but I would not be without the Recco…

  22. Michael says:

I would like to see a quality law enforcement uniform developed. A quality plate carrier for plates and soft armor.

  23. Caleb W. says:

I’d like to see a Messenger bag tailored for the Dog Trainer. a flapless messenger bag, with multiple sections to hold Dummies, leads, whistles, Dog collar controller, a place for a dummy launcher, etc. in multiple color options.

That would sell. and thanks for the opportunity

  24. James says:

I too would like to see arcteryx branch out into Assault and LR Med Bags. They’d do amazing things with their tech.

  25. Nate says:

Light weight chest rig that breathes!

  26. Jordan says:

I’d love to see a version of the current combat jacket featuring a hood and front pockets in the Wolf colour way. This would be a really good piece for plain clothes work.

  27. Reuben says:

Could you offer your military line in ABU.

  28. Jonathan Goll says:

I would like to see Arc’teryx develop: A molle sleeve for the H-150 riggers belt, have an option for a cobra buckle, their own personal retention lanyard.

  29. Wesley Gragg says:

I would like to see a line of business casual work clothes. Lots of pockets to store everyday essentials without having to carry an extra bag. They would need to be stain resistant, durable, and professional enough to be seen in the public eye or by millions on television. It would be a cross over civilian line that all professions could wear. I am in sports medicine at the college level and the best work clothes that I can find just don’t meet the standards or are way to expensive. Thanks for allowing us to have input in what you design.

  30. Spencer says:

It would be nice to see a water repellent thin outer shell (Spring/Summer rain) with a removable/tuck away hood. Along with a sidearm slot that can snap under your secondary on your hip (so the jacket doesnt interfer with the draw).

  31. Chris Kahlert says:

Even though I am an A 68W (Combat Medic), I have several pairs of tanker coveralls. I wear them camping, working on the truck, 4 wheeling, and when playing air soft. I am also a big fan of the Army 2 piece flight suit. Both those articles of clothing could use an update but are very comfortable and useful.

As A medic the flight suit pants are great but need a pocket added for scissors. What if you were to make pants designed for medics/flight medics. Reinforced crotch for squatting so I don’t rip open as I did many times over there while wearing ACUs. A few more pockets for the extra crap medics need to have handy etc.

  32. Bryan says:

How about a series of Arct’eryx pants in khaki canvas (similar to Mountain Khakis or Vertx) but with Arc’teryx design principals and make a line of them that are more “streamlined” and “subdued” i.e: less cargo pockets, etc. that’s easy to throw in the washer and dryer and come out with minimal pressing. I think a less “tactical” look at a reasonable price in order to afford more than one pair is just what’s needed.

  33. tom says:

    would love to have it!

  34. Matt Farr says:

I’d like to see Arc’teryx make some duty uniforms for LEO use, as well as some civilian clothes designed for concealed carry. Something that didn’t scream tactical but was efficient in holding up to holster wear, with belt loops that would support carry style belts.

  35. AL says:

The Canadian military is crazy for Arcteryx (probably because our SF guys get it). If the Arcteryx LEAF line had designs in CADPAT I think you would see allot more sales to canadian troops.
Some might argue Arcteryx is too much for a regular soldier…I see LOTS of Arcteryx around at work…

I am not sure about the copyright and legal barriers involved though…

  36. Ted Mueller says:

I would like to see some gear in the ATACS pattern.

  37. Chris W says:

I would really like to see a less tactical looking pant similar to the raider in the LEAF line.

Also, the Talos in croc. (They keep saying its coming, but still waiting!)

  38. Jim says:

I’d like to see Arc’teryx produce a line of concealed carry clothing designed for protective operations, plain clothes carry and civilian use with the same exceptional quality at a reasonable price point to the market.

  39. Ralph says:

I would like to see development of Eon Socks, similar to the baselayer components they already distribute.

  40. James says:

Would be interesting if they offer LE gear… sure beats the Cr^p that comes out of teh uniform companies… Short sleeve option might work too

  41. Bob says:

I would like to see them develop more urban and CCW friendly clothing. Arcteryx are the masters of designing clothes are are both functional and stylish. Plus, I would love to rock their gear at work more often.

  42. McPosterdoor says:

What you need to develop is a line of products with maximum performance but minimal noise! Your products are amazing from packs to shells, I’ve preached the good word for over a decade. However both the military and civilian excursionists would love shells (jackets and pants) that retain the waterproof breathable engineering you are famous for but with much reduced ‘swishing’ caused by movement. Hearing nature when there is nothing else around is amazing, not hearing your own movements when there are bad guys around is even better. Keep up the good work!

  43. Ryan Westphal says:

I believe it would be cool to see something never done before (atleast I don’t know if this has been done) but if you guys made a jacket and pants set up that can be in any kind of weather condition with out doing much, like if you could use it in freezing rain, snow conditions, hot summer conditions, or just cold conditions, but it should be tough of course and kinda sleek for that civilian or operator. And maybe make a series like one that has more pockets, different colors and camo’s, or maybe one thats more for snow than warm weather but is still great to wear in hot weather or a dry enviroment. And maybe some jackets can have molle weave on the back for back packs or other pouches. And maybe you can make a pair of boots that are just perfect for the pants and jacket set. Thanks for listening.

    -Ryan Westphal.

  44. Drew says:

I would like to see more quick drying frabrics used in the temperate climate line. I do a lot of river crossing in Alaska and having something that dries quickly is a huge plus.

  45. Nate R says:

Maybe some sort of chameleon style of camo that will color or pattern shift based on the surroundings would be nice. 😀

  46. Ryan DuRussel says:

I agree with what a few other people have said. It would be great if you guys made some conceal carry clothing. I am not talking stuff like the tactical clothing that screams “HEY I AM CARRYING!!!” I am taking about stuff like a full front zip fall or spring jacket possibly with a hood. You could make it like an inch or so longer so you could carry a Raven Holster OWB without the bottom of the holster sticking out when you bend. You could possibly add some weights by where the bottom of the zipper is located to aid in sweeping the jacket away. Another cool idea could be a winter jacket that allows access to your pistol some how from a full zip position.

  47. Chris says:

I second what Keven said. “I would love to see non-insulated gloves geared towards keeping your hands dry vs keeping them warm. Preferably 5-fingered.”

  48. Trevor G. says:

I want arcteryx to create light weight 100% waterproof gear in some more “forest” camo and colors for us mountain people.

  49. B Mac says:

Anything in Multicam that is not over $100.

  50. Charles says:

I’d like to see a concealed carry cold weather line that can have multiple layers that are removable but not a bulky system that keeps me light, dry and warm
