Negative Comments

I’ve noticed a LOT of negative comments lately toward products featured on SSD. Generally, I don’t mind negative comments so long as they are constructive in nature. However, many have been mean spirited. Some have been by readers who don’t have anything to say, but that doesn’t seem to stop them from trying. Quite frankly, both sorts have gotten old.

I realize we have quite a few new readers here so I am going to remind folks that although this is the internet, on SSD readers should conduct themselves as though they are having a face to face conversation. Constructive criticism is encouraged but quippy, “you suck” comments will not be tolerated. This isn’t the place for it. The written word is a powerful tool and you can say a lot, positive or negative, without being ugly about it. Learn how. It will take you far in life.

Thank You…

I know that SSD has started to get linked on 4 Chan’s /k/ image board so with that community entering the site there are sure to be some unique ‘challenges’…

Those of us who’ve been here awhile are going to “know that feel”

    • SSD says:

Everyone’s welcome. It’s just that guests need to act civil while they are here.

  2. Recon says:

Couldn’t agree more. Too many lose themselves in the annonymity of the internet. Keep up the good work guys, I am one of the many that rely on you for news about the latest and greatest.

  3. C3I says:

I agree with Recon.. When I’m looking for news and info, SSD is the first place I go. Always reliable and unbiased info here. Speaking of which, I know you’re covering the Warrior West expo this week, where might I go to find a comprehensive list of these sorts of events and trade shows? Thanks in advance..

    • SSD says:

That’s something we’ve never done but maybe we need to start a calendar.

      • C3I says:

That would be amazing! A comprehensive schedule of events across the country so fans, operators, and industry leaders would have that resource to plan with would be very helpful! It would also be a place event coordinators could send their event details… I hope its somthing you can do!

For those acting in anyway less than civil just doesn’t seem to make sense if you really think about it..

One of the cool things about this site is the fact that some really innovative and sometimes amazing stuff is brought to us here and a lot of it seems geared toward but not at all limited to the special forces community or advancing tech or safety to help get the dangerous jobs done by any and or all of our military forces and or law enforcement communities.

If you think about the mission statements of these groups you find a common frequency that travels through and sustains all of them.
    – Work as a team or fail
    – Everyone takes care of themselves and each other
    – leave no one behind
    – respect, integrity
    – have character.. don’t be one..
    – take risks, he who dares wins

Why do you think they are called the quiet professionals…??

Most of the real operators I know are type-A but soft spoken. They have enough of the right kind of ego to fire a weapon and kill someone but do it serving a greater purpose than their own.

Without passing judgement, if you want to be on the heavy level you need to think bigger then making negative destructive comments.. Instead, why not make constructive supportive comments or if you disagree with something, challenge the idea or product or person but do so with the intention of a win win..

To SSD.. Thank you for the contribution you make everyday with this site. I really enjoy coming on here and get a lot out of it.

    Myles

I’ve been coming here for quite a while, and I for one, could not appreciate this site more. My entire life from the time I was little revolved around my love for and desire to be a soldier. It’s all I ever wanted. A while back that life was taken away from me much sooner than I wanted. I was medically separated from the Army and I haven’t been able to find work so I now live on the streets. I’m not complaining about it. It’s just my life now. But I would give anything to be called soldier again. Pages like this connect me back to that world and quite honestly give me back a tiny piece of the only thing that keeps me going.

People can choose to think I’m being over dramatic if they want, but if it weren’t for this website, and those like it, I would have swallowed a bullet. I’m sorry you’ve been getting negative comments, but maybe it will balance things out a bit for you to get a positive one.

Your site and the community that fits with it, literally saves my life from time to time.

    Thank you. Very much.

My comment on the last thread has vanished, but I wasn’t trying to be negative, so My Bad.

Folks need to understand that SSD is simply a presentation medium. They report what the industry is doing. Yes they do opinion, but that is usually on DOD procurement policy. They do not print opinions on what the industry folks are doing. Granted there is a problem with the way some of these companies behave and some of the stuff they put out. But that is not what SSD is here for. That is up to others.

I can’t say for certain what the comments are, but I suspect they are the typical low brow one liners or someone who has little or no experience in the field choosing a very non-tactful way of expressing an ill formed opinion.

I for one welcome censorship of the negativity, stay on target!

/k/ traffic aside, you have some dim-witted and whiney commenters at times. I welcome your moves to muzzle those with nothing of value to say who can’t stop flapping their lips. This site is quality beyond quality and I feel that I’d truly be behind the times and have much less helpful information for my customers without your wonderful infotainment. Keep up the good work and know that we appreciate all you do!

I’ve found that as I’ve gotten older, I get really annoyed at stupid people. And I find that the Internet is rife with them. Almost to the point where I don’t read forums/comments as there are so many morons who think their opinion matters.

Sorry, bad morning. But I do enjoy the site and all the work you put into it.

  10. JC says:

Gotta keep those sponsors happy. There’s like a million ad banners in the sidebar. That’s a lot of products we can’t be negative about.

    • Scathsealgaire says:

      JC,
I read the request not that you can’t be negative. But you have to be constructive in your negitivity.

      For example.
      sucks – not helpful
sucks because it accentuates my love handles – Helpful, but comment needs to be more descriptive. Sucks, does not help a manufacturer improve their work.
needs much improvement because it accentuates my love handles, perhaps it needs an inbuild corset? – Helpful, moves the conversaion onward and gives the manufacturer an idea of how to improve their product.

      Cheers,
      Scathsealgaire

      • JC says:

Nice. I’m going to use that in future. Let me know who to ascribe the quote to in the footnotes.

But it is pretty evident from the number of sponsors that this blog has somewhat of a slant. Luckily I’m pretty well educated and I don’t believe everything I read on the Internet.

        • Scathsealgaire says:

“Let me know who to ascribe the quote to in the footnotes.”
I didn’t quote anyone. But if you want to quote my examples, feel free.

          Cheers,
          Scathsealgaire

I try to be constructive and positive in my comments, but perhaps I can shed some insight from a trolls perspective.
The tactical industry releases A LOT of products. This industry is all about the new hotness, the next best thing. In the mad scramble to come up with the next big thing, the industry throws out all kinds of stuff that aren’t really improvements. How many different ways are there to make a plate carrier? Not many, but it seems like a new one comes out every day. Same thing with camouflage patterns. There’s a new one every week, and they all have similar colors in similar patterns. It’s easy to get cynical when new products are released. “Oh now what revolutionary improvement to the t-shirt have they come up with?” Things get crazy price tacked onto them because they’re “tactical.” It’s kind of off-putting sometimes.

    Just another perspective.

  12. Ben says:

Thank you so much admin. I am getting so tired of the endless, pointless hate spread around the internet all the time for no more reason then to be mean and spiteful. I’m a born cynic and I can appreciate some good humored ribbing and cynicism, but the out and out hate and spitefulness you see on forums and blogs almost constantly is just tiring.

If people just acted like they would if they were face to face the internet would be a much more polite and pleasant place. There is no way even 5% of these people would have the gusto to talk to another persons face like they do on forums/blogs.

Some good cynicism is healthy and important imho, but its often just hate mongering instead.
