The US Army has two Mountain Schools. One is run by the Vermont National Guard, located in Jericho, and has been around for decades. The other is a more recent creation. The Special Forces Advanced Mountain Operations School is located at Fort Carson, Colorado and operated by A Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne). although initially founded out of necessity by the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne).
Master Mountaineering Course students at the Special Forces Advanced Mountain Operations School conduct a one-day operation in the Colorado Rockies, bringing an ODA-sized element up Longs Peak.
Sir,
US Army has 3 Mountain Schools, you forgot the Northern Warefare Training Center (NWTC) http://www.wainwright.army.mil/nwtc/
Based at Ft. Wainwright with training conducted at the Black Rapids Training Site approximately 30 miles south of Delta Junction, next to the Delta River.
That’s a good point.
I did BMC at the NWTC fond memories on gunnysack not so many on gulkana… I hate the cold now.
To Hell with climbing.
Wow a one day op. in the mountains…one word, fuck Bridgeport!
It’s good to hear SWCS took over manning the cadre. In the dark ages, a couple ODAs in 3d Bn had to man it, along with all their other, normal ODA jobs. That limited classes to once or twice a year, and gave those teams very little down time between BH/Kosovo rotations, PMT, CWT and everything else on the training/deployment calendar.
Damn, saw the parade of alpha green up in the Boulderfield. Then later at the Bell. Shoulda said hi. It was a very temperate day above treeline but nice work nonetheless!
