A Statement Regarding Patrick York Ma

I have known Patrick Ma for over 10 years. I have always admired his creativity and his passion for offering new and innovative products. I was surprised to hear of his leaving Triple Aught Design, the company he founded in 1997. Although it was not a secret, it wasn’t well known that Patrick had sold a great deal of equity in his company to two partners a few years ago. I wish him well, no matter where life takes him.

As of May 1, 2013, Patrick York Ma has separated from Triple Aught Design, LLC. This separation is the result of unresolved disputes with the two remaining managers of Triple Aught Design LLC, Brett Eisenberg and David Cahill. Messrs. Eisenberg and Cahill along with Patrick originally formed the entity known as Triple Aught Design LLC in August of 2010. Patrick founded Triple Aught Design in February 1997 and TAD Gear, Inc. in 2002. He served as the principal of Triple Aught Design from 1997 until 2002 and the CEO and Chief Designer of TAD Gear, Inc. from 2002 to 2010.

A statement from Patrick Ma.

From the company’s humble beginnings, my time with Triple Aught Design LLC/TAD Gear, Inc. was an exceptional and tremendous journey with the many friends and amazing customers who shared my passion, commitment and vision of this brand and lifestyle. I wish to convey my most sincere gratitude to all of the awesome folks who followed me and the brand over the years, and made possible, this great journey we were on together. I will be spending the next few months focusing my priorities on spending time with my family and enjoying the arrival of my new son Wolfe Alexander, who was born in early June. There will be many new adventures that lay before me as a father, artist, designer, and simply as a man in the world. Many of us will cross paths again, and we will share in these new journeys together with the truest spirit of camaraderie, conscience, honor, integrity, adventure and exploration.

We have one life in this world, so do good, have the strength to fight for what is right, live and laugh with those who you love and cherish, follow your heart and intuition, and have the courage to blaze the new trails that you are proud to call your own.

I have tested hundreds of pieces of gear over the past five years but still two of the finest were the Predator Hardshell (eVent) Jacket and Predator Hardshell Cargo Trousers. They are as good as anything I have ever seen from Arcteryx or Patagonia which is really saying something in my opinion especially when you consider those products came from a small shop in San Fran. Patrick was always good to me when I called and I am sorry to see him leave TAD but wish him the best going forward.

Been shopping @ the store and using the gear since the beginning (RocketWorld FTW!). Still use some decade-old gear–some of which was purchased at Dogpatch, some of which was purchased through Grey Group when they were stocking TAD (MC Force 10 Ripstop Blouse–best shirt EVAHR). As market conditions have changed, and TAD persevered to meet their customers’ needs, Patrick was ALWAYS there, and was ALWAYS a class act.

I’m just an outsider with ZERO SA on everything that went down so I’ll wish EVERYONE good luck, in the hopes that their time together benefits them AND the customers they serve in the future.

Hope TAD can weather the storm. From my limited interaction with Patrick, he seemed like a standup guy. Excellent gear.

  8. Rob says:

    Good Luck Patrick!

Will be interesting to see if Patrick starts a new company a what vision it takes.

This all kind of makes sense to me now. Triple Aught Design seemed to stop catering to the MIL/LE and extreme outdoorsmen crowd, and more towards the skinny pant wearing hipsters, around the same time frame that these investors came into play.

Best of luck and all the best to Patrick moving forward.

This is exactly what I’ve been thinking. I guess the writing-was-on-the-wall when they opened the Hayes Valley boutique and shut down the Dogpatch store

I hope Mr. Ma will come back to his “roots” and start making professional grade clothing and equipment again.

Good luck with your new journeys. Enjoy fatherhood, they grow too fast. I hope to see your creations in the future.

  11. Luke says:

mountainsmith came before kifaru, dana designs came before mystery ranch, TAD came before….?

    I can only dream.

I had the pleasure of meeting Patrick a couple of times at the Dogpatch store. He was always a stand up guy. My Ranger Hoodie is still the warmest most comfy pieces of gear I have ever owned. Best of luck to Patrick in the future and enjoy the time you have with your family.
