5.11 Tactical Tac Tec Plate Carrier

The Tac Tec Plate Carrier from 5.11 Tactical has been around for awhile now but we thought you might be interested in this video.

I’m well known as a “tactical snob” but I have to admit, 5.11 surprised me and has integrated quite a few features into this design and they’ve done it by doing it their own way. The project to create this carrier started a few years ago. Right up front, I’ll tell you I don’t own one and I don’t know what armor it is meant to accommodate. It is a one size fits all affair and will accommodate up to 10″x13″ plates. Also, it does not accommodate side plates. But, extendable drag handle intrigues me as it will allow the rescuer to stay more upright if not more agile while dragging the victim. I also like the bungee-style cummerbund to help accommodate additional sizes.

Available in Black, Sandstone and Tac OD.

I believe I have seen a video where a 5.11 rep said that plate pockets can be woven in on the side. I have seen a Crye design that looks like it could be be nice fit. Not sure though.

    Where is it made?

My favorite feature is how the back plate sits 4″‘s from the base of the dudes neck.. ie where the top of his heart and a large proportion of his lungs are…

Yeah, I thought at first it might just be that the actor should have adjusted the shoulder straps but looking at how large they are……..yeah, that’s definitely a no go. There’s just way too much material up at the top that lowers the plates

Does anybody have a feedback about this PC? Has anybody tested & evaluated it?

I don’t know about feedback, but if you’ve ever heard of I Am Never Quit, (a charity that raises money for veterans through extreme endurance events, https://neverquitmission.org/) the founder runs ultramarathons using this model.

I’m a fan of drag straps, I have one on my kit that attaches to my belt so I don’t get choked out by my PC. That built in one is a good idea but you’ll notice he grabs the plate under his chin to keep from getting bashed/choked

    Pretty cool concept

This is the external 5.11 grabdrag handle that can be molle’d on to an existing plate carrier: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7px7342he00s83q/20130908_155729.mp4?n=52810512

The concept of the carrier is cool, but the end product… not so much.

Take the JPC style c-bund, First Spear 6-12, and DARC drag strap and then change them enough to not have the advantages they offer. Sadly thats what this does.

  8. Luke says:

I’d say the harness looks above average comfort wise, as do the pads on the inside.

  9. Jim D says:

The cummerbund velcro is great. They put hook velcro on both sides of the carrier, and loop velcro on both sides of the cummerbund flaps. That way if you drop the front flap while donning it, it won’t velcro itself shut on you mid donning – the only way to secure it shut is with the cummerbund flaps under the front flap.

The padding is probably best in class, too.

Adjustment is painfully slow and tedious, but should only need to be done once or twice.

They also put velcro at the top of plate pocket to lock in different plates from shifting left/right.

The criticism about the plates not sitting high enough is very valid though. There is definitely some dead space above most shooters cut plates in this carrier though…
