OR – Mystery Ranch – A Legend Returns

Mystery Ranch has reintroduced the Terraplane. If you want to know which pack SOF was wearing in the 1990s, this is it. Long produced by Dana Designs and predecessor Kletterwerks, the 5,000 cu in Terraplane was a favorite of many SOF units and in particular, NSW.

Mystery Ranch recently decided to reintroduce the popular pack. The big changes are in the suspension, but the classic lines and pocket layout remain the same. Above you can see the newly updated model in OD and Foliage and below is the new Terraplane in Black.

Below is a Dana Designs example.

And this one is the rarest of them all. It’s a Kletterwerks Terraplane, circa 1975.

Welcome back MR Terraplane! You were missed.

Astralplane was the biggest and badest of them all. I remember drooling over the Astralplane Overkill in old Dana Design catalogues back in the day. So happy they bought the Dana brand back. I have an old DD Big Sky, and it’s nice to know I can send it in to MR again if I ever have issues.

One of the best packs ever made. Bravo, Dana.

Doesn’t K2 now, Marmot, own the Astralplane/Terraplane naming rights as per the Dana Designs acquisition in ’96?

  4. Brandon says:

Oh I miss my old Astralplane. Heavy thing but you could carry the world in it.

Has it been adapted to the NICE frame or some other suspension?

  5. Darren says:

I have a Dana terraplane overkill from about ’96… and despite many miles, carrying medical loads, not a stitch out of place. It’s heavy, but indestructible.

Would the belt on these fit the original Astralplane? I have an Astralplane and have got to fat for the belt. Love to get a new bigger belt.
