I would suggest making the patch with two different color schemes: One for people who will buy them, the other for people who get awarded one as a “Meritorious Comment Citation,” etc.

Obviously, comments attract page views which helps sell ad space. So why does Brother Graves mock that which is a significant component of my will to live (because I pencil whip resiliency training)? I suddenly have a tremendous sense of melancholy.
Not all comments help sell ad space.
I would imagine the kind of dumbassery that took place in the previous comments doesn’t help sell anything at all. For anyone.

Sorry. I’m certain that’s true which is why I never comment on products you feature. I still contend the comments draw click-through traffic, regardless of their frequent sophmoric nature. And I do understand this site is not a charity, even though it supplants psychological counseling for some (like me).
If I wanted click-through traffic, I’d start offering just a paragraph on the main page with a jump to the rest of the article and posting lists with each item on the list on a different page.
Think about how many sites inflate their page view numbers that way.
Those sites also have little-to-no fresh information. Their misdirection is as much about ad revenue as it is making the “article” seem a little more puffed-up when it’s actually lacking content. Like most click-bait waste of time websites.
Luckily we unwashed masses have something better to read each day. I think the admin is doing okay for himself and not pulling the click-bait nonsense nicely compliments the wealth of content and that combination keeps readers like me coming back multiple times a day. SSD sets the bar for journalism in this industry.
SSD also does not have irritating advert popups, though I would keep view it repeatedly even if it did.

This is carefully timed with the start of Boy Scout popcorn selling season…..
I am part of the problem, so this is extremely hypocritical, but I think a lot of the recent comments and blatant flaming and name-calling are poisonous and are tarnishing the reputation SSD has had for the past few years… Having said that, the articles are just getting better and better, and the quality has not decreased from the authors in the least. This has always been an INDUSTRY blog, not specifically an opinion or a product-pitching blog, and as such there are a huge variety of topics and styles of posting that the authors use.
I think the comments are important, because they allow people to voice their opinion, good or bad, unlike an online shop or a Facebook page, where users can have their comments deleted simply because the manufacturer doesn’t agree with them or because it doesn’t make them look good. There will always be people who don’t like certain products, and their opinions are just as valuable as someone who blindly likes every product.
Trolling is not helpful though. There are constructive ways to demonstrate your opinions and be critical of products, but trolling and flaming other users just makes you look like a Jack Wagon.
If this site adds any value to your life, please read and heed “Darrel’s” post above. As much as many of us self-acualize through posting here, SSD is about new kit & proven TTPs, and anything that may detract from that devalues SSD. Please remember that we are all guests in the house of SSD.
I mostly agree with this. Some posts are seemingly for garbage gear and are just shill, but the vast majority of content is fantastic. I like the inspired and insightful comments that can come out, where the majority of the SSD community is knowledgeable and professional.
Unfortunately, that open door means we also get some vitriol. I originally was wary that the ODG LBT battle wasn’t shut down, but I think the ‘do nothing’ approach allowed the community to reflect on the incident and collectively recognize that it was the wrong venue, displayed in the wrong way, and does devalue the instigators.
I don’t think we will weather too many of those in the future, simply because the costs for the parties involved is too high when done in that fashion.
The term ‘shill’ denotes that I am taking money for them. I am not.
Ah. I misused the word then. I understood the context it normally gets used in, but was incorrect in its use.

I know comments give you a lot of grief, but to be honest, most of the comments I see on here are pretty well thought out. I know you get your occasional troll, but compare the comments on here to say, some of the folks who post at kit up and you’re dealing with frigging rocket scientists.

I am here for the content. The admin has done a fantastic job keeping me informed and entertained and he should be applauded for advancing gear knowledge.
