No bullshit, in OIF III we were so far away from any other units that we made a Thanksgiving dinner from a pair of turkeys our Pesh guys shot. After feasting like vikings, a pair of Blackhawks showed up with the CG of MNF-I bringing us a Thanksgiving dinner in marmites. It’s the only time I can remember having Thankgiving twice in one day.

  7. RJ says:

LOL! Ate and served! Also, cooked T-rats in a garbage can! Happy Thanksgiving to all my brothers and sisters – present, past and future!

  8. Jeff says:

Ate from those on countless FTX’es over 5 years. Even ate a Thanksgiving dinner that turned out to be turkey raided from the MREs. What a letdown! But, it was hot & Graf & Wildflecken are colder than a welldigger’s fanny come November.

  9. Chalky says:

Never had thanksgiving dinner out of a mermite container but I have had the privilege of eating the beard out of the bottom of the can used to sop of the bacon grease.

    Still can’t eat bacon

  11. Jon, OPT says:

    Yup, 96, 97, 98, 04, 05, 06… mermites or forward chow hall, same shit.

  12. Richard says:

  16. Vince says:

Oh, the memories of eating lukewarm turkey, sliced, beans, green with potatoes, mashed and sauce, brown in a shitty place with nothing but thanks for a taste of home. Then of course, the shenanigans that followed with a top secret bottle of fun from a care package!

isn’t that gsg classified. I know when we got the TS/SCI bottles in the mail. Your buddies would help you with anything. If they got some.

I ate Thanksgiving dinner from one while sitting on a sandbag with President Bush 41 and Mrs. Bush sitting 10 feet away chowing down with us. I remember thinking it was odd being so close to a president with an automatic weapon slung on my back.

  20. cy says:

I remember how on range guard at Benning the raccoon’s would climb in the back of the humvee and pop open the container to eat the leftovers from supper. It would drive us nut chasing them away.

  21. Matt says:

Thank you if you served or have served for this great country. You don’t get told enough but We The People appreciate you. You deserve the best.

Thanksgiving of ’96 out at NTC. Sleeping in shelter halves in the Dust Bowl before and after rotation. Now, 19 years later, as a Senior Drill Sergeant, I got to serve Thanksgiving to trainees coming through Fort Benning. Time flies!

Many Christmas and Thanksgiving meals eaten out of a Mermite, on those really shitty days, it was a nice warm meal that keeps you going.
