Last December we told you that the US Army’s 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) was going to revert to an older version of the beret flash they abandoned in 1985.
The Army plans to webcast the event so current and former members of the Legion as well as supporters, can watch, no matter where they are. Be sure to visit www.dvidshub.net from Mar 23 2016 10:00 AM EDT to Mar 23 2016 12:00 PM EDT.
“…going to revert to an older version of the beret flash they abandoned in 1985 FROM THE FLASH THEY ABANDONED IN 1964.”
Fixed.
The members of the 5th Gp requested the change. They wanted to have a direct connection to the former members of the group who fought there. The fact that the men requested it made it special to the 5th Gp’s Vietnam vets.
Old coot and former 5th Gp Vietnam vet.
Wrong.
Talk to the guys on the teams, we never wanted your flash.

Back to work you.
We did not “abandon” our flash in 1985. Then-Colonel Jame A. Guest did it along with CSM Foremen, to “wipe the stain of Vietnam off the 5th Group.””
I heard General Guest was there.
I hope the PAO gets a talking to from the Group CSM for not focusing on the units in formation wearing Green Berets.
If MG Guest was there, his name wasn’t mentioned in public (and many retired generals, colonels, and sergeants major were). It was a great ceremony. I talked to a lot of young soldiers and they seemed good with the change (although I’m sure they wouldn’t have told us old soldiers “this sucks”). pbr549xxx – I agree with you…the Fayetteville Observer published a photo to go along with a short article but he only showed the Support Battalion guys (with red berets). Pretty funny.
