Brigantes Presents – High Angle Solution – Black Crows, Orb Militari Skis

Everyone once I a while you get to play in a project that is ultra exciting.  We have just delivered our first winter warfare Black Crows skis.  Based on the Freebird Orb, the Orb Militari offers the perfect balance of functionality and ease of use.

Made with a white top sheet and base they are ready to go for Arctic operations.  The skis themselves can be fitted with a classic 75mm Telemark binding or with a pin binding for more mountainous use.  The ski itself is more rigid than its civilian relative in order to better deal with the large loads that winter troops carry.  All white skins and poles have also been produced to accompany it.

Initially made in very limited numbers there is only a few pairs left that are available to troops heading out in to the snows this winter.  If you are interested in pbtaining a pair then please email.

civvie orb freeride is probably ~1.4kg per ski in 178. One would think this must be at least equiv. to the regular orb with titanal rein, esp. given the 178 orb freeride is suited to a typical resort/backcountry skier who is 5’9″. 178 is a great length for all purpose mil ski, but you factor in a 200lbs plus skier carrying combat load, you need it to be really stiff&strong which this ski probably is. I’m going to guess these are closer to 2kg per ski.

        Hi Verti,

You are correct with what you are saying. These skis come in at 3236 grams a pair w/o binding, so heavier, stiffer and stronger that the standard freebird Orb. 178cm has proved to be a good length for a multi purpose ski.

When skied back to back, with AT bindings, the freebird Orb is softer, more forgiving and more suitable as an all round touring ski. The mulitari proves to be fun, fast, grippy, maybe more of an all mountain feel.

The idea of the Freebird Orb was what we were looking for, so working with BC, we made it more appropriate for a loaded military skier. A 90kg individual plus a full combat load sometimes approaching the same weight. We wanted something that would look after the user, something strong enough, but easier to ski that a more traditional nordic touring ski. One aim was to keep weight as low as posable, but retain the performance and strength.

Some users are using this ski have paired with the Voile Switchback binding and the Lundhags boot. We also know of others using a Dyanfit AT binding and various AT ski boots.

        Thanks

This ski isn’t shown on the BC website, so you wont find much info out there about them. There is more on SSD than anywhere else. They weight 1618 per ski, 3236 a pair. The Orb is the resort ski, the freebird Orb is the touring ski. The Militari fits in the middle. Softer and more forgiving that the orb, stiffer and stronger than the Freebird version.

      Thanks

    Voile Binding components?

  4. Graham Smith says:

    G1E,

Some end users have been using these skis with the Voile Switchback set up, paired with the Lundhags Expedition Guide 75 boot. Warm feet and a good link between skier and ski.
