This is their lightest plate to date. Using DSM Dyneema(R) Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene and Virfex’s proprietary manufacturing technologies, they minimize weight and thickness while maximizing multi-shot protection. The NIJ promulgates standards for body armor used by law enforcement agencies in the USA. The NIJ reviews submitted body armor against their standards including the review of the armor’s design, test data from NVLAP accredited labs and on-site inspections of manufacturing facilities. The NIJ Level III standard requires protection against six shots from a reference .308 NATO M80 bullet.
I don’t see M855 listed. Why would you spend a ton of money on a plate that won’t stop one of the most commonly available 5.56mm rounds available to the public?
There’s still tons of 5.45 X 39mm 7N6 out there too. I don’t see it listed either.
Because people see that it stops 7.62×51mm and automatically just assume that it’ll handle any “normal” 5.56×45mm threat just fine.
To be fair, I wouldn’t be surprised at a plate not being tested against 5.45×39mm threats, there are many plates out there that don’t test for any such thing despite being rated to defeat various 5.56×45mm threats with hardened penetrators, such as the U210 and 4800LV, both of which are rated against both M855 and M855A1 (with the latter being even rated for M80A1), but make no claims against any 5.45×39mm rounds.
