From the Vault: Remington Nylon 66 Rifle

Brownells From The Vault series is a great feature and this week they covered the Remington Nylon 66, a rifle I received from my father as a kid and still have to this day.

I bought my first one in 1965. Ended up selling it before I went into the service. I bought each of my 3 children theirs in the 70’s. Oldest sold hers before moving out of state. Son sold his during the Obama sales run up. The youngest never got hers as she became a felon. I still have it new in it’s original box. A Bi-Centennial model. I later bought another for myself from my BIL estate. It’s a shooter. I’m keeping this one.

  2. I have a Mohawk 10C Nylon 77 I picked up at a gunshow for $350 about 4 years back.

Great shooter. The detachable mags make it quicker to load than the 66; unfortunately, the 10-rounders aren’t the greatest quality and may loose rounds if loaded to capacity.

Also, only 541/581 mags are readily available and may require a bit of modification to function properly, as they’re not exactly the same pattern as the original 77 mags.

Still, if you can’t locate an original 66, the 77 is a fine compromise.

When I got to get my first “real” gun, I almost got this, but opted for the Remington 552 Speedmaster. I still have it. It’s a versatile gun, since it shoots .22 short, long, and long rifle.

What a coincidence. I handled a Nylon 66 at a gunshow this weekend, but passed, as it was pretty beat up. First one I recall seeing since a neighbor kid had one in about 1974. He also had an original AR-7 and some other cool stuff – one of the most well armed kids in our 5th grade class!
