Triple Aught Design Brings Back The Shag Master Blanket

Years ago, I bought a cool fleece blanket from Triple Aught Design. Unfortunately, they only made a short run of the Shag Master Blanket, that one time. I’ve been after them for years to make more and now they’ve made it happen. I’m not taking credit for this production run of this cozy blanket, made from Polartec® Thermal Pro® High Loft, and takes it’s name from their fuzzy hoodie, but it sure put a smile on my face. It’s 78″ x 54″ making it quite a bit longer than the original.

Be advised, this is a pre-order, but they are offered in three colors, Black, Eclipse and Phantom. Orders begin shipping May 29th.

I’m sure the TAD unit is higher quality, but Cabelas has been selling Polartec hiloft blankets for quite a while. I bought one on sale and turned into a knee-length anorak.

    • SSD says:

Is it Polartec? Or fleece of unknown origin?

      • Luke says:

It is Polartec, but certainly not as high a quality as this or most of the apparel weight thermal pro. The scrim holding it together is much more sparse and it tends to lose fur much more readily then say a Monkey Man jacket.

  2. Will says:

Well, there goes $200 of my infiltrator jacket fund. Also to the dude above me, hiloft and thermal pro are two different fabrics, think Gore Pro shell vs 2 layer Gore kind of comparison. Also Thermal Pro is supposed to retain more warmth with less weight and dries quicker than normal hi loft. This thing is cool as hell though, thanks for the tip SSD.

  3. Joe says:

Pretty sure i saw this at bed bath & beyond for $30. Dont charge operator prices for grandma’s throw.

    • SSD says:

I can guarantee you didn’t. But hey, go get that one and wrap yourself up in it while you wear your Condor plate carrier.

    • Che Guevara's Open Chest Wound says:

So you’d deploy to northern Iraq with a $30 blanket from Bed, Bath and Beyond? Or how about a shitty-weather month long field problem? Honestly, efficacy of the TAD blanket aside, it sounds like you’ve never spent a night in the field. But hey, at least the BB&B throw will match the décor of you mama’s living room.

      • Joe says:

When I deploy the northern Iraq it’ll be with the sleeping bag system and the wobbie I got from mcss which will do the job a whole lot better than this.

Seriously paying over $100 for a tactical blanket it’s ridiculous is paying over $100 for a tactical belt that holds up your britches.

        • SVGC says:

Dude it’s just a cool blanket and that’s it. If nobody buys it, they’ll stop making it eventually. It’s not malicious, it’s just something cool. If you don’t want it in Iraq grab a blanket from the stack of them along the wall or from the good will “Feed Bags” lying around.

          • SSD says:

It will sell out and they won’t make any more for several years because they don’t make a lot of money making them. Despite opinons to the contrary Berry compliant fleece isn’t cheap, particularly Polartec fleece. Add in manufacturing and it becomes a lot more than what you would pick up at Walmart. Of course, Walmart products are made in China.

            • SVGC says:

I understand that. I was commenting on the fact that there’s no sense in getting riled up over it. It exists because it’s cool and it doesn’t need more importance than that. Im sure it’ll sell, and that being on here will help it sell. I dig it, just like I dig the jacket, keep it coming I say.

  4. Gerard says:

I plan to order one this week

  5. SSD says:

I apologize to all of the guys who told us that they don’t want to buy one of these. Apparently, I wasn’t supposed to share the pre-order with any of you in the first place. So, once again, I apologize for violating your safe space by posting something you can’t afford.

    • Hubb says:

You’re damned right I’m triggered…I’m mad that they stole my call sign!

    • Fan Dag says:

You spend your sponsored dollars how you want, well spend ours how we want…and piss and moan along the way.

(Yes, I clicked all…ALL…of the ad links before commenting, if only to help keep the lights on.)

    • Jay says:

Thanks for posting, I was able to snag one. Typically with TAD, I’m too late to the game and all the new releases are sold out so I really appreciate the heads up. I’ve been looking for something like this for a long time.

    • NWJeep says:

This comment is exactly why I enjoy this site so much. haha

    • Che Guevara's Open Chest Wound says:

Honestly, I love this site and respect the hell out of your hustle; you always break the best industry news stories. Please don’t get sucked in by cyber-commandos who have never spent a night in the field; they just aren’t worth it.

      • choocha libre says:

Because nothing says “I operate” like taking a fleece blanket to the field: they’re not great at keeping the wind, rain and snow out, not super compressible and in combination with a poncho for the infamous bivy of last resort Taco-roll, are about as effective as a china-made sleeping bag from walmart. Probably great at a cookout when you’re wearing your skullkillermolonlabe tech-T, multicam range shorts, and your tactical flipflops and an offshore breeze sends a shiver up your spine and the goosebumps are throwing off the fearsome vibe you hope your tattoos are sending. I couldn’t care less how expensive this blanket is, i’m sure it’s a great blanket and with that little TAD label you can impress your friends with your tactical fashion sense when you go car camping or throw it at them when they couch surf at your pad and they will know that when it comes to tactically-inspired gear, you only buy the best. From the look of it and given TAD’s rep for high quality, this would make a great gift, but a serious piece of kit that would make the cut and get packed for a few nights out in the hinterland? Not so much. On the other hand, it might almost make sense when for a casualty in a skedco or gamow, easier to wash than a sleeping bag…there it might almost make sense.

        • SSD says:

I really appreciate the young guys talking about “going to the field”. This is for being comfy when you are at home on the couch or in a FOB. And yeah, you slept in a bed, with sheets and a pillow, on your last deployment.

  6. chris says:

Shit! Hadn’t bought any TAD for a while, went back to bikes. But this…this is tempting….

  7. LawDog says:

The cost is fine, but are these made in the US with US materials? If not it would seem to be a rip.

  8. Sean says:

I don’t even see why people are bitching about the price. It’s pretty good for TAD. Especially if you use that MIL/LE/Vet discount program they have.

    • Big Brad says:

Good [price] for TAD means just incredibly inexpensive, rather than the usual astronomically expensive like their gear normally is.

I don’t understand why some people fawn over their gear.

I also don’t understand why some folks always get upset when many point out how expensive it is.

Let’s be honest. If you are spending $200 on a fleece throw then you are either a gear dork of the highest order, independently wealthy, or an idiot.

  9. PTMcCain says:

Who would have imagined the news of a forthcoming new warm, cozy, soft and cuddly blankie would create so much drama?

    • Stefan S. says:

John Wayne and Chuck Norris used no Blankie that’s why. Precious snowflakes need blankies.

  10. Matt says:

Shit even if it was free you get the bitchers asking why they only get one and not two.

  11. Dellis says:

I would buy one but my dogs would steal it from me….I bought them a BBB blanket but they gave it to the cat.

  12. martin nielsen says:

    Pre-Ordered!!

    Goes with my Woobie.

Still need the Promethous PDW Technical Picnic Blanket….
