I rarely post critical comments regarding clothing or equipment I buy, but as an owner of a 1st gen Raptor I would never trust it in snow/freezing conditions.
“Disappointed and Frustrated” are the first adjectives to mind when I think about how mine has performed in the rain since the 1st time I wore it in actual rain.
It doesn’t hold its DWR from the house to even the nearest day hikes <30 mins away, either in pack or worn out there (I baby my gear as much as possible), wets out almost instantly, significant seepage through the fabric after that. Drastically outperformed by a variety of less expensive fabrics. Its price vs. performance has been embarrassing.
Interestingly, my hiking companion's Neoshell-shell kept her perfectly dry in circumstances that left me noticeably wet and irritated. Hers is from a defunct brand but seems like it might be a heavier variant? I dunno, I just know that having a $425 jacket not be able to keep me dry through a 30 min rainshower is a little aggravating.
Perhaps Neoshell "works" in snow, but I'll never know.
I think the general consensus is that Neoshell and eVent are both less waterproof then Goretex (and actually most similar to Gore Windstopper; which Gore doesn’t even market as waterproof) and this in combination with todays hamstrung DWR makes them even less tenable. Certainly some folks have luck with both, but the performance has been less consistent at the very least. I have no experience with Neoshell but I’ve had several mixed experiences with eVent and know your pain.
