US Space Force Guardians To Begin Wearing Distinctive Rank Insignia Soon

Late last year the US Space Force unveiled their new rank structure for enlisted Guardians.

Earlier this week, Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force Roger A Towberman shared a video updating Guardians on uniform initiatives. The main issue is implementation of rank chevrons for the OCP uniform which is the duty uniform for most Guardians. Like the Army and Air Force, the USSF rank insignia is worn centered on the chest. The service is shooting for May availability.

As for service dress updates, initially, CMSSF Towberman said that Guardians will continue to wear their Air Force blues but that they are going to “Space it up a little bit” with distinctive buttons, name tag and collar devices.

Below you can see CSO, General John W. “Jay” Raymond wearing the Space Force collar device.

A completely new service dress is still in the works. Seen below is a prototype which debuted at last September’s Air Force Associations Air, Space and Cyber Conference.

Supply chain issues will likely delay its fielding once everything is finalized.

I understand they’re trying to pay homage to their Air Force affiliation with the dress uniform, but they should set their own identity. Make the jacket black and the trousers and shirt shades of grey.

I also wish they could use multicam black for their utilities, for no other reason than it doesn’t matter if they blend in with vegetation and it would further establish the new branch’s identity. Sadly, congress mandated no new uniforms.

Give them all those surplus digital tiger stripe BDUs the Air Force threw away.

      • Jim says:

That’s a good idea to save some $

        • SSD says:

It would cost money because they’d have to start manufacturing them again. Those uniforms aren’t manufactured anymore. They gave them to Civil Air Patrol and now they are having trouble sourcing uniforms.

    • GANDIs says:

Space force still deploy with other services. The argument that they don’t need camo is the same one used for the Air fForce. Tired and false.

      • Do we have some space level JTACs coming?

        • PB says:

No, it’s going to be the MJs, or Moon Jumpers, to rescue scientists when endangered on our future international moon research station.

I’m joking of course, but that would actually be pretty great and I hope we do have an international research station on the moon, like we do on Antarctica.

          • Ehe I could see where we may not be far from directing traffic to be dropping space laser hate down on the earth, but that sounds interesting too.

Do we tell that that A-10s can’t make the BRRRRT sound in space?

      • PB says:

Then in those extremely rare situations they can be individually issued a couple sets of the same uniforms that the branch with whom they’re working is wearing. That is better anyway, as a deployed member of the Space Force is going to be an augmentee to the deployed unit, where it would be better to don the receiving unit’s uniform.

But back to how frequently a member of the Space Force deploys: The Space Force manages spacelift operations, satellites, and the space-based sensors on those satellites. Almost entirely CONUS or garrison environments. Please elaborate on where they are being deployed to (without specifics of course). Almost all forward deployed space-related jobs are being accomplished with any of the myriad of space-related roles currently performed by the other services. The other services don’t run the launches, or control the satellites, but in-theater communications, taskings, and intelligence that come from space are pretty much completely handled by the other services.

Hey Space Force, ________________ (insert snarky cultural sci-fi reference here) called, and they want their uniforms back.

  3. the hun says:

Just a little bit restructuring and the usual new paint and the A-10 is a,
no is and will be “THE SPACE HOG”!

  4. Ross B says:

What’s the deal with the really big pants in the prototypes!??

Only way they can carry a phases plasma rifle in the 40 Watt range using a modified ankle holster and not draw attention…
