idIRt from Cyalume

If you’ve spent any time at all in the military, then you are well with Chem Lights and perhaps with other Cyalume products as well, but here’s one that’s so new, you haven’t seen it yet.

We called this kind of stuff pixie dust, but Cyalume’s new idIRt (Intrusion Detection InfraRed Traceable) technology brings discreet tracking to the masses. You just mix it up, sprinkle it in an area likely to attract the target, and let him do his thing. Then, you can use night vision systems to track his movements. Naturally, this is great for LE use, but can also be used for other security applications such as catching pilferers or tracking vermin.

idIRt is undetectable with the naked eye so it will blend right in with other earthen materials. However, it emits in the IR spectrum so you can easily detect it’s presence with the aid of night vision.

Pick a likely ingress route to a favored IED location, and track back the perpetrators.

Place it on mountain paths overlooking a base camp.

Applied with a gridded stencil mask, disturbance would be readily noted.

And the future app, two part nano encapsulated beads could activate under pressure, giving the product an exponentially longer life. That could even be mixed in paints or applied to non lethal munitions to further mark perpetrators.

Some of the OC spray manufac (Sabre) add the UV dyes to their sprays for offender identification, has a 48hr life.

How easy is it to “brush-off”?

  6. The video shows idIRt on our actors. They had been in these clothes for hours, and had brushed off all the excess. The IR agents get into the fabric, and cannot be brushed off. It can be washed off, though, with varying degrees of effectiveness.

The best part is that the bad guys never know they’ve been tagged. It’s great to throw on car seats…
