Flip-Box

Leading up to Outdoor Retailer you get loads of press releases. Some things are cooler than others, but this one looks interesting.

It’s a cooler that folds flat for transport and storage and flips open with a self-locking design. The Flip-Box is American-made from 100% Apro recyclable polypropylene; the same material used in bicycle helmets.

Look for it at OR in the Sport-Brella booth (BR543).

ok this is a neat evolution of preexisting tech but im still left saying whats the big deal. they just took the collapsing caterers box’s that my mom used and just use insulated wall instead of ABS plastic

      1/3 the weight?

    • SSD says:

Yeah. So I’m gonna throw back on you this question. If it was so obvious, why didnt somebody else do it before?

      • dan says:

on the question of why didn’t some one else do this before its simple they didn’t think there was a large enough market, or they didnt have the ability to make it at a price they thought they could sell it at. the collapsable container has been around for as long as i can remember, all that was done differently was change it from abs plastic to a durable insulation. the build material is different and that is what makes it neat but im not left saying wow im left saying finally.

No one’s done it before because there’s nearly zero need for a folding ice chest.

I love how in the video she puts it in a shopping cart as if that’s the only cooler that can fit. In 99.9% of the average Joe’s use, it’d be folded during the trip from home to the market, then filled, taking up the exact same space as a regular cooler for the remainder of the trip.

There’s also no way it keeps beer as cold as ice for hours. Not to mention, it’s obviously useless when you bought a warm 18 pack on the way to the river.

The only useful aspect to me might be the shape, ironically. The folding design requires short sides which is undoubtedly a limitation, but I think the form factor is quite nice.

Whammy, you’ve obviously never had to palletize all of your unit’s gear and deploy to a remote location and had limited pallet space. This would allow a unit to deploy with coolers and not take up as much space. Additionally, they wouldn’t take up as much room in supply when stored between missions and wouldn’t have that funk smell from being left closed while in storage.

      There’s lots of good here.

I agree, I love having a cooler or two around the house for when a BBQ or party breaks out unexpectedly, but they don’t get used very often (5 or 6 times a year) and between those times they sit around taking up space in the shed and smelling bad.

I’ve not looked at the full product details yet, but if it is waterproof (some sort of liner?), I’ll be getting a few of them.

    SSD wins that round!

“Household 6” has issued a purchase authorization just so she has something with her to stash all of the frozen goodies that we pick up on our commissary runs. We live over an hour away and the cold bags that we have been using work fairly well but aren’t very durable. This looks like an excellent replacement.

Damn, I’d love to put one of these in my trunk for my gear.
