It’s a s simple as OCP
If you notice in the Army’s announcement last Thursday that they plan a transition in Summer 2015 to the Operational Camouflage Pattern, they never referred to that pattern’s developmental name; Scorpion W2. Some found the announcement cryptic. But the reason is simple. As far as the Army is concerned, it’s OCP. And, OCP is OCP, which may blow the minds of some CSMs as this rolls out, considering OCP has been synonymous with MultiCam for several years. There are going to be instances in the future where your OCPs aren’t an exact match.
There are several advantages for the Army in transitioning to OCP. For one thing, they don’t have to make any drastic changes to existing contracts for OCIE. For another, it’s easier to continue to use the equipment previously purchased in OCP. In my opinion, the Army is looking at this as a supply chain solution.
Who’s Down With OCP? Yeah, you know me!
For Soldiers, this decision is a major boon. If you look at what’s available on the open market in OCP, there are currently a lot of options out there for equipment. In fact, chances are good, you’ve already got a whole bunch of kit in OCP. By the Army’s own admission, it will take years to fully field the new OCP. During the transition period, things will be very fluid. Use that to your advantage.
So, OCP, it is. Embrace it.
But the pockets are changed enough that all the OCP uniforms currently in use are unlikely to be authorized…
I think what the Army is really targeting is the gear currently in the inventory that is multicam. There is a lot of serviceable gear in MC but not very many serviceable uniforms. For me, I saved one uniform from my deployment to go home in. Its the only one that does not have at least 3 patches, worn down and washed out. What is really nice about being able to use MC gear is that there is a ton of companies that offer gear in the pattern.

SSD had there been any serious on upgrades or improvements to our body armor systems or are we stuck with IOTVs for now and SPCSs is we’re lucky.

This is PHENOMENAL news. With no word on whether Scorpion W2 will even be available to the private sector, plus the likelihood that Scorpion W2 will be monopolized for contract fulfillment, this is the best thing that could have happened. Government waste is minimized, those serving will be able to realize their investment and gear makers can keep on truckin’.
Caleb Crye, please consider NOT suing. We in uniform really need for this to happen…
It would make the most sense to embrace Scorpion use if MC is acceptable as it will increase MC purchases and the licensing money will make it back to Crye.
This is a fantastic common-sense decision. Multicam and Scorption W2 are close enough that they will be fine together and it’s a pleasant shock to me that the Army agrees.
Mostly every other facebook post on the new uniform has the blurb “are you down with OCP?” haha
Nevertheless, I hope to remain with my current coat and not the one with that silly zipper.

Yup, there’s gonna be a stretch when those who made it out of Afghanistan with a serviceable set or three will wear “OCP I” as an emblem of OEF service.

Out-Fucking-Standing! I have enough OCP to be set for a while. Hit meh with that ALARACT and I’ll be in it the next day.
This is pretty smart. A certain amount of mix and match (and these differences are minor) is not end of world. It was done in roll out of ERDL camo in the latter part of Vietnam and to some extent with tan base and green base BDUs vice the more green ERDL jungle cammies in the early 80s.
SMA Chandler was at Fort Drum today and I participated in a town hall meeting with him. I asked him if those of us equipped with OCP from Afghanistan deployments would be authorized to wear them in garrison once the ALARACT authorizing OCP in garrison is published.
He replied that this very course of action has been recommended and the Chief of Staff is expecting a detailed analysis on this in the near future. He elaborated it is not only the personal economy of the soldiers already equipped which is on their mind. The army has $600,000,000 worth of OCP uniforms and equipment stockpiled and want’s to get the full wear out of those items.
Take that for what it’s worth, but that’s what the man said.
