I remember waiting with bated breath while hoping for an announcement of the camo improvement program stage four. I just hope they don’t do it again…

I wish the leadership would tell the soldiers something about wearing OCP till OCP hits the shelves, I don’t see the leadership putting out any solid data as SSD has proven this over the last several years. I find it dishearting as a soldier

  3. ?????7541 says:

My guess? Woodland and 3-color desert for all! Lol. Everything old is new again…

    • CAVstrong says:

Actually, I think i might be ok with this. I’d even prefer to adpot Woodland and 3-color desert as our daily wear similar to the marine coprs, with the uniforms cut in the NWU style. With Coyote brown boots and belts and Scorpion undershirts and OCIE.

If it works, I’m all for it!

If I was to make a change to woodland, I would make the brown a lighter shade (maybe to marpat’s coyote).

Woodland looks too dark in brighter areas and against plants. I know that changes somewhat when it fades, but I would assume the Army tested it unfaded.

      Here’s a video I found useful.

I dunno looking at some of these videos I’m starting to think we should adopt tiger stripe, all terrain tiger and desert tiger….

Holy crap Im getting old, I need glasses now!

  5. BAP45 says:

As “soon” as they made their last announcement? ha

  6. Riceball says:

So, will whatever bookend patterns the Army ends up adopting also be known as OCP? Because there isn’t enough confusion as it is between old OPC and new OCP. They could call them OCP(D) for OCP Desert and OCP(W) for OCP Woodland.

  7. bulldog76 says:

    * in old school announcer voice* is the saga nearly over will the army finally choose a camo patterns that work find out …well when they announce it

  8. CAVstrong says:

So the bookens will be soley for combat uniforms (IE Combat shirts and pants) right? When and where will they issue those? Won’t wearing any different pattern over the top of those uniforms have the same effect as solid color?

Instead of looking for a “perfect” camo/color solution, why don’t we look for a better gear solution. For example adopt something like the CPC with reversable plate bags that we can switch out as needed?

I don’t know how much more of this saga I can take. I’m really getting to the point where I think we should just modify the color scheme and scale of MARPAT call it good and continue mission……

    • RJ says:

That’s basically how UCP was born. Without the scaling.

    • Bert says:

Wearing OCP OCIE over woodland and desert will not have the same effect as solid colored OCIE. The colors of OCP are shared with or similar to the colors used in the old woodland and desert, as well as the woodland and desert MARPATs. At longer ranges, the pattern differences will be largely unnoticeable, and the color differences (i.e. the colors not present in desert but in OCP and those not present in woodland but in OCP) will make the soldier appear as a bit of varied terrain, something solid color does not do as well, seeing as it draws the eye.

This has not been a search for perfect camo, at least not since the camo trials failed to produce a winner before congress got involved. No, this is an attempt to make up for the Army’s failure to produce viable camouflage for soldiers for nigh on a decade. The “simple” solution of adopting a new OCIE scheme and “just” appropriating MARPAT” are not remotely simple or viable solutions. Congress demands no new patterns, changing MARPAT in any way is a new pattern, even if you are just removing EGAs from it. Adopting CPCs would require its own testing, evaluating, and competion, all for the “need” of reversable armor? A transitional pattern, namely OCP, supplemented with dedicated enviromental patterned uniforms for the extremes of clime is the real simple, attainable solution.

      • majrod says:

Where’s your data coming from that OCP OCIE doesn’t have the same effect as solid colored OCIE. I vaguely remember the opposite coming out of the last decade’s research.

OCP uses the same colors as old woodland, desert and current MARPAT? Again, evidence? OCP does not go with everything. That’s the same approach that brought us a “universal camo pattern”.

Removing the crest from copyrighted patterns like MARPAT and AOR are not “new” patterns nor against the law congress passed.

Your opinions seem to be influenced on what answer you want in the end than actual facts. That’s fine. It’s a free country but you are misstating facts or making stuff up to support your conclusion vs. the other way around.

  9. Seamus says:

Does anyone know the patterns being tested? I saw a few pics of Marine Woodland but not sure of the scope of patterns in contention.

    • tictac says:

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the test is just for old school woodland, Marpat woodland, 3-color desert and Marpat desert.

They are testing the compatibility of the patterns with OCP gear. Whatever patterns work best with OCP gear will likley be the new bookend patterns, but it is the army, so who knows.

  10. Stryker Magnum says:

At AUSA I saw the Brits and the New Zealanders sporting their new camo patterns, and recalled the lack of drama in those programs. I saw the French wearing their old patterns without a care in the world, and recalled how camouflage has never been an issue for them in their down range activities spanning the last several decades. I saw the Australians wearing their “Hearts And Bunnies” camo instead of their new multicam pattern with no signs of inadequacy or social awkwardness. I guess they’re laid back enough to just wait for the new pattern to make its way through the supply system.

Then I saw General Odierno in the hall and had to suppress an urge to tackle him.

    • majrod says:

Agree on your eval of the lack of focus on “what camo I’m wearing” by our allies. On the other hand they weren’t wearing a camo pattern that the troops hated or felt was making them more vulnerable.

Your comparing apples and oranges about drama. Those countries didn’t have branches that copyrighted and blocked other branches from using their patterns for whatever reason.

I’m ok with beating up on dumb decisions but if one is going to compare us against other nations one should include the dynamic differences to be fair to all parties involved.

  11. FHRITP says:

I dont understand why they dont say something about all of this!

    ANYTHING!

Its not a frickin secret obviously. It reminds me how some of my old coc liked to keep things ‘secret’ until the day before, even though everybody already knew. Literally makes no logical sense.
