Gene Higdon Launches Mean Gene Leather

Many people don’t know that before Gene Higdon founded a tactical nylon company he was a saddle maker.

Earlier today he informed us that he is getting back into the leather business with Mean Gene Leather. So far, Gene has only announced the Barbarian belt which will be distributed by War Sport Industries and G-Code Holsters.

I have been wanting a leather cobra belt for a long time, and Im glad he did it before I had to. Now make sure to do it in black so I can wear it with my suit.

I remember Gene telling me he started out as a saddle maker and it was like a lightbulb going on-you can see the influence in the way he built his stuff and it led me to consider a wider set of my own influences.

It makes sense really when you think about it, saddles and other harnesses play essentially the same function as human load carriage systems. Namely the transfer of a load to a body. There’s a lot of interesting hardware and so forth in the equine world.

Glad to see Gene is getting back to his roots. I sort of expected he’d get into motorcycle related leather but tactical stuff piques my interest…looking forward to seeing what comes. Molded leather tacos anyone?

Beautiful leather work but those cobra buckles….I don’t know…I appreciate them functionally but they look so out of place with the leather, just aesthetically too dissimilar in my not so humble opinion.

And he does this as Austrialpin goes to powder-coated tan.

Pretty sure Gene will be buying up the “Goldmember” buckles previously used on arid-colored gear….

That would be pretty cool to see gold ano on that mahogany leather belt.

I’m not sure I’ve got a use for a leather Cobra belt, but it’s kinda cool. Looking forward to seeing what else they come out with.
