Why do we still go around publicly publishing these sorts of lists if we have an asymmetric enemy that is openly using social media and the like for targetting?

  Why? Because these lists mean exactly shit, and give out NO further information than could be obtained by the enemy by other means. This doesn’t give out service numbers or addresses or specific jobs within a unit. The info on this list could be obtained by sitting outside any base, and watching for stickers on the back of personal vehicles, or getting a job as a cleaner at any building and just watching around the base for nametags and scrolls/patches/tabs etc.

    I think you’re missing the point. Although correct, names can obtained in many ways, the point of his argument is that by publishing lists like this, we’re making the enemy’s job a little easier.
    
    Best Ranger Comp is great for morale, but can be ran with a little more tact in terms of participants’ information.

      So the whole thing is supposed to be a secret? It is live streamed on the internet. It is also open to visitors/spectators throughout, and the winners are publicly announced by the Army.
      
      PERSEC I agree with, but if you put yourself into a public competition, that goes away. We can’t hide everything all the time.
