New Military ID Cards Being Issued for Military Family Members, Retirees
Monday, August 31st, 2020WASHINGTON — The Defense Department began issuing Next Generation Uniformed Services Identification Cards on July 31, 2020, the first time since 1993 that changes to the card have been made.
Michael Sorrento, director of the Defense Manpower Data Center, discussed the new ID cards that are for military family members, retirees and other eligible card holders.
The new ID card transitions the current laminated paper card to much more durable plastic material, similar to that used for the common access cards used by military members and DOD civilians, he said.
Also, the new ID cards feature enhanced security measures that will reduce the likelihood of them being compromised, Sorrento said.
Although the new ID cards are available now, Sorrento said, only about 20 Real-Time Automated Personnel Identification Card System sites currently offer the card because new equipment is required to produce them, and that takes some time. All RAPIDS sites worldwide likely will have the new equipment by the end of the year, he said.
However, to reduce foot traffic — particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic — Sorrento said that unless a card is about to expire, it would be better to wait until summer to get a new one. Even then, he added, it would be good to call ahead first to schedule an appointment.
The complete transition to the new ID card, is targeted for January 2026, Sorrento said. In the meantime, the current cards will continue to work.
DOD is looking at future capabilities that can be provided with the new ID cards, Sorrento said. For example, users of the card may eventually be able to go online and order a card through a proper vetting process and have it directly distributed to them by mail, rather than sit in a RAPIDS office and wait for a card to be made.
The underlying technology could support greater and greater capabilities for a long time to come, he added.
White Out Overwhites from Wild Things – The New Heat for the Snow
Thursday, August 27th, 2020Travel to Vail, Colorado and you’ll find a 13’ tall ‘Ski Trooper’ monument honoring the formation of the Tenth Mountain Division. Decked out with skis and old-school Overwhites – the Ski Troopers of the Tenth, and the Finnish that inspired them, might be seen as founding fathers of Overwhites in the military.
And if the Tenth represented the introduction of Overwhites to the military, it could be said that 1969’s ‘Where Eagles Dare’ and an Overwhites clad Clint Eastwood was Hollywood’s introduction of Overwhites to the masses.
Fast-forward: times have changed, and so have White Out Overwhites®. Still a favorite with select military units, as well as Hollywood, Overwhites provide concealment when the snow flies – deployed, or on the screen.
When there’s a need for Overwhites today, military units, the brands and community that support them, as well as Hollywood, all call Wild Things:

New SOF Protective Mask Undergoing Testing at Dugway Proving Ground
Wednesday, June 17th, 2020Personnel at the Combined Chemical Test Facility are preparing for the arrival of the Avon M53 protective mask in late May, developed with features to meet the requirements of Special Operations units.
Extensive testing is expected to begin in June at Dugway Proving Ground, the nation’s primary facility to test defenses against chemical and biological agents.
“The Avon M53 is highly regarded by users and agencies throughout the world due to its protective features,” said Test Officer Andrew Neafsey. “We will aggressively challenge this mask in order to verify the high level of performance required.”
The M53 is a variant of the currently issued Avon M50 mask, designed by the Department of Defense to meet the requirements of the Joint Services General Purpose Mask.
Like the M50, the M53 is designed to resist traditional chemical and biological warfare agents, select Toxic Industrial Materials (TIM), and particulates (including radioactive dust).
Among the features of the M53 variant is a wider field of vision, ballistic protection and scratch resistance of the eyescreen, and connection to either a canteen or hydration bladder for drinking.
The M53 is designed to work with most PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) without having to remove or change components. It can supply its wearer with filtered air from surroundings, tanks, air purifying respirator or rebreather.
The M53 is built by Avon Protection Systems of Cadillac, Michigan, a U.S. subsidiary of Avon Rubber of the United Kingdom that has been making respirators and protective masks since the 1920s.
