Dishonorable Disclosures

Thursday, August 16th, 2012

Definitely worth a look. I too have been more than a little unimpressed when I see information i still treat as classified show up on the lips of Joe Sixpack. Unfortunately, while OPSEC violations (and the far more dangerous disclosure of classified info) are inexcusable at all levels, if only it were as easy as just pointing the finger at politicians. Sometimes we are our own worst enemies. I’ve gotta say that I’m a follower of the old adage, “People who live in glass houses…” A swift kick in the ass to some of our own who have talked out of school would be appropriate as well. If these guys had done that rather than making a half hour political ad I might have been more impressed.

The SSD Logo

Wednesday, August 15th, 2012

Just after the site launched in 2008, Mil-Spec Monkey designed the SSD logo for us. Overall, it symbolizes the individual warrior through the traditional Davinci’s Vitruvian Man representing how art and science combine to outfit the Soldier blended with a 1960s futuristic feel in the form of the Olympic Sports Pictogramme-style which also alludes to the athletic facet of the Warrior. It holds the rugged individual as its core with a nod to the past and a look to the future. The font is Toaster.

Operator Overload

Sunday, July 29th, 2012

Iver the years, I’ve sat by and watched folks go off on full on rants over use of the term ‘Operator.’ Apparently, I have a high threshold for BS because it never seemed to set me off like it did my friends. I took a ‘whatever’ approach to the issue. But lately it seems like everyone and their brother wants to be an ‘Operator.’ Why, just today I perused a website created by a cabal of ‘tactical operators,’ whatever the hell that is. This isn’t a bash on my brothers in blue but the term has become especially prevalent in the LE community, distastefully so.

On the other hand, I know a whole bunch of real deal ‘Operators” of the SOF kind who earned the title. The funny thing is, they don’t run around using it. In fact, if you ask them if they were an ‘Operator’ they’d probably say refer you to the friendly buck Sergeant depicted in the photo at the top.

So, how about we, as a community, police ourselves up a little bit? And seriously, could someone tell me what a ‘tactical operator’ is?

BTW, I’m a former US Army EW/SIGINT Voice Intercept Operator. How’s that for a lolz?

A Statement from TacticalGear.com’s CEO Regarding the Colorado Shooting

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

TacticalGear.com posted this statement from their CEO, Chad Weinman, in response to the perception that statements from their company in the media might be construed as anti-Second Amendment. We are publishing this statement in its entirety in the hope that it reaches widest dissemination.

A STATEMENT REGARDING THE COLORADO SHOOTINGNews July 23 2012
— By Staff

A post from our CEO regarding the tragic shooting at an Aurora, Colorado movie theater.

On July 2, 2012 TacticalGear.com received an order from James Holmes, the alleged shooter in the Colorado theater massacre. His order included an urban assault vest, two magazine pouches and a tactical knife spending a total of $306.79. Mr. Holmes elected to pay an additional $15.63 for UPS 2nd Day Air to expedite his order. We processed this order as any other, and Mr. Holmes signed for the associated package on July 5 at 2:21 p.m. local time.

In the wake of the tragedy, we have done our best to cooperate with the media and law enforcement agencies by passing on any relevant information. We have since been inundated with countless phone calls, emails and interview requests. Much of this communication has been quite hostile and threatening in nature. We have been falsely accused of selling Mr. Holmes firearms and ammunition over the Internet illegally without conducting the mandated background checks. Some members of our customer relations team have been brought to tears by people insisting that we have “blood on our hands.”

In an effort to combat this falsehood, myself and our Chief Operating Officer conducted a series of interviews in an attempt to clear up any misconceptions. We reiterated that TacticalGear.com primarily serves the law enforcement community and that we are proud to supply these heroes with the tools they need to keep our communities safe. During the course of these interviews, we were repeatedly questioned about what steps we were taking to prevent the general public from acquiring tactical gear in the future. In response to this line of questioning, statements were made that some have perceived as anti-gun and anti-2nd amendment.

We want to set the record straight and publically state that we fully support the 2nd amendment. The spirit of what we were trying to communicate was that tactical clothing and equipment should not be put in the same category as firearms and ammunition. Firearms and ammunition are subject to considerable regulation, and the notion that tactical gear should be as well is outrageous. Unfortunately, in some instances our choice of words were poor and misguided. For this, we accept full responsibility and sincerely apologize to anyone that took offense to these comments.

I am very proud of TacticalGear.com. It is a great company with a great staff. Each day we wake up thinking about how we can better serve our customers the gear they need when they need it. We work tirelessly to achieve these goals, and we are passionate about what we do. Many of us are avid gun owners and enthusiasts. We frequently visit the local shooting range and keep firearms in the office. We wholeheartedly support the freedom Americans enjoy to legally purchase guns and ammunition. I personally believe that if some members of the audience had concealed carry weapons at hand that night perhaps less blood would have been shed. No amount of gun control is going to prevent a sociopath hell-bent on terrorism from hurting a large group of people.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families of this horrific event. If you have any questions or comments about this issue please direct them to us via email at pr@tacticalgear.com.

Blogoshere – Home Combat Magazine

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

Every once in awhile we are going to mention a new blog on the scene and ask for your feedback. We think it will expose our readers to new opinions and perhaps help out the writers so long as we all agree to offer constructive feedback. Notice we didn’t say criticism. Feedback can be positive or negative.

Home Combat Magazine is a web based publication that has an interesting niche. They are looking at this whole prepper/tactical business through the eyes of a family man. It’s easy for most of us to look at the world and what we do in the lone wolf mode, or even as the member of a team of our peers. But it’s something different to begin to take our families into account.

Check out homecombatmag.com and tell us what you think.

Yes, We’ve Got Shills

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012

For years you couldn’t comment on SSD. Then, we opened it up, and there are days that we wish we hadn’t, like the ones where we figure out that shills are coming in and decrying the competition. They are here, like a case of bedbugs. So, read the recent comments with a tainted eye. And, for the folks coming in and pretending to be a concerned citizen, we’ve got some advice. Just remember, your behavior isn’t risk free and we record your IP. In case you think it’s ok to come in and spread ill will for gain, take a look at the link.

Tighten your shot groups up or we’re going to have to change the comments portion of our program.

Why Are “We” Sucked In by Con Artists?

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012

Lord knows every type of business has their fair share of con artists. For us, every trade show, they pop up like bad pennies. iO9 takes a stab at explaining why we fall victim. In our business I think it’s a combination of a desire to be liked; everyone like to be told they are talented, valuable, or what have you. And once sucked in, pride; being too proud to admit we were taken.
