Missing Us in Your Facebook Newsfeed?

Wednesday, June 27th, 2012

Facebook has developed this cool new feature to twist my arm into paying them to share my newsfeed with SSD readers that are our fans on Facebook. They want me to ‘promote’ my posts for a fee. For example, my reach has gone from about 2000 for each post to about 600 since they instituted this policy. However, you can ensure that you receive the SSD posts on your newsfeed by clicking the “Like” button for SSD and selecting “Show in News Feed”. Do this for all of your favorites.

Why? Well that’s a Darned Good Question

Wednesday, June 27th, 2012

Recently, Riceball, one of our regular commenters asked this question –

“Why is it that lately whenever there’s an article on some piece of gear or another there’s at least one person who has to comment and say that gear X is a rip off gear Y? The way I see it, there’s bound to be a lot similarities when it comes to tactical gear, there are only so many ways that you can skin a cat after all. I’m sure that many or all of these companies could design gear that looks like no other but then it probably wouldn’t work like any other as well. This is not the world of fashion where looks is everything, in the outdoor industry (to include hunting, camping, tactical, and related industries) form follows function meaning that it has to work first before looking good.”

Truth be told, that’s a great question. What do you guys think?

Rest in Peace Mrs Plumley

Sunday, June 3rd, 2012

Soldier Systems regrets to report that Mrs. Deurice Plumley, Household-6 for CSM Basil Plumley US Army (Ret), passed away recently after a long illness. CSM Plumley had been at her side every day for the last several months. They were married for almost 63 years. CSM Plumley was played by actor Sam Elliott in the movie We Were Soldiers. His wife reportedly described his portrayal as ‘very accurate’. By all accounts Mrs. Plumley went above and well beyond the character one might desire in an infantry SNCO’s wife and was, quite simply, a lovely and classy lady.

“Miss Deurice was every bit as much a soldier as CSM Plumley.” Joe Galloway

Our condolences to the family and friends of the Plumleys. God keep you, ma’am.

There is a guestbook on line to express condolences.

Back to Gilwell

Saturday, June 2nd, 2012

I’m out again this weekend for my second weekend of Wood Badge fun. Over the weekend you’ll see a few blasts from the past as well as a few new items. Since this is a full three days, I’ll catch up with everyone on Tuesday.

Wood Badge is an international adult leadership program for the Scouting movement developed initially by Scouting’s founder Sir Robert Baden-Powell. Lord Baden-Powell was a Lieutenant-General in the British Army who served in the Second Boer War. Based on his experience as a Cavalry officer he wrote several books for military training. After finding out that boys had been reading his works, he penned, “Scouting for Boys.” This led to the first Scout camp in England at Brownsea Island and later to a leadership development program at Gilwell Park for adults.

In order to recognize the graduates of this training program, BP turned to one of his war trophies. He had captured a necklace belonging to Chief Dinizulu while pursuing him in Zululand. The necklace was 12-foot-long with more than a thousand acacia beads which were used to denote a warrior. BP awarded beads from this necklace to the graduates of the adult leader training. In modern times Wood Badge graduates are awarded a leather thing with wooden beads.
