Afghanistan Cuts Off Its Nose to Spite Its Face

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

According to an AP report By HEIDI VOGT filed this morning, Afghanistan’s president issued a decree today giving a four-month deadline for private security companies to register and join the Afghan Police Force or disband.

According to the article:

“It does provide an exception for private security firms working inside of compounds used by international groups, including embassies, businesses and non-governmental organizations.

“They will have to stay inside of the organization’s compound and will have to be registered with the Interior Ministry,” the decree states.

All security outside of these compounds will be provided by Afghan security forces, as will all security for supply convoys for international troops, the decree says.”

This move will result in either the Afghani Police actually becoming an effective force, or more likely, in speeding up the withdrawal timetable of US and NATO forces. There is little chance that commercial businesses who provide security services will allow themselves to effectively be nationalized. This move will also most likely trepidation on the part of those interested in investing in Afghanistan as they concern themselves over security of their investments as well as the threat of further nationalization.

Afghanistan is assuming a serious risk with this move as they have proven unable to secure their own objectives, let alone guard coalition partners. In order to make up the shortfall of over 30,000 security contractors who currently protect convoys and installations, coalition forces will need to substantially increase the number of troops on the ground or develop alternative and more costly logistic strategies. Either alternative will surely cause countries already strapped for cash to question their commitment to Afghanistan’s security.

Ironically, the Karzai regime may become victim to its own decision to take on too much, too soon.

Sometimes It’s Best to Just Keep Your Peace

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

For some reason, FNH USA felt compelled to release a statement regarding SOCOM’s disclosure to Military.com that they are not going to purchase any more Mk16 SCARs. We read their press release and immediately the “Did they just do that?” look came over everyone’s face. It smells of desperation. Perhaps they should have taken the first sentence a little more to heart.

“(McLean, Va.) FNH USA is cautious in releasing any information due to the nature of the pledge to our customers.

We can, however, reiterate that the MK 16 (5.56mm variant), MK 17 (7.62mm variant) and the MK 13 Enhanced Grenade Launcher Module (40mm), which make up the SCAR family of weapons, have each met, and in our opinion exceeded, all of the USSOCOM program requirements. It is also a matter of record that the SCAR has been proven to be superior to existing legacy assault rifles after numerous Department of Defense tests in both lab and field environments.

FNH USA believes the fact that the SCAR program recently passed Milestone C and was determined to be operationally effective / operationally suitable (OE/OS) for fielding, highlights the tremendous capability the weapons system offers deployed special operators.

FNH USA believes the issue is not whether the SCAR, and specifically the MK 16 variant, is the superior weapon system available today …it has already been proven to be just that. The issue is whether or not the requirement for a 5.56mm replacement outweighs the numerous other requirements competing for the customers’ limited budget. That is a question that will only be determined by the customer.

While we know that the MK 17, to include the “common receiver” and corresponding 5.56mm conversion kit is an option, other Services and SOF components will have the ability to procure the MK 16 stand-alone rifle under the contract if it better meets their mission requirements.

In conclusion, the management and employees of FN are proud to provide this generation of special operators their first, entirely new assault rifle that meets and, in our opinion, exceeds the demands of today’s battlefield.”

BCB International’s Crusader Canteen

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Crusader Canteen system from BCBThis is the canteen long issued to British troops and adopted by Bear Grylls for use on his show, “Man vs.Wild”. While I am a big fan of hydration bladders there is certainly something to be said for a canteen and cup combination. For example, you can boil water to purify it or to prepare a warm drink or for cooking purposes.

The Crusader Canteen Cooking System from BCB International consists of a 58 pattern canteen and plastic mug as well as a cooker and metal mug with lid to help water boil faster, which all nestle together to fit into a 90-pattern water pouch. You can cook with clean, smokeless and odorless heat from a gel or block fuel to boil 1 pint of water in eight minutes.

Death Valley Magazine Presents…

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

“CIVILIAN CONTRACTORS: The Greyman” I have been getting quite a kick out of Death Valley Magazine, an online blog for the Independent Contractor. Not only is the info good, it is slathered in the ironic, tongue-in-cheek goodness that I know and love. I highly recommend it.

It might look good at the gym, but clothing like this will get you killed, or worse yet, attract smelly bearded men to your metrosexual ass

One of my favorite articles is “CIVILIAN CONTRACTORS: The Greyman“. You really need to go read it, particularly those of you that wear the “5.11 Tuxedo”. However, my favorite visual aid from the article is the one I have chosen to share with you. It’s stuff like this that will make the message stick with you.
