IWA – H&K Releases New Firearms

Heckler & Koch unveiled several new German-legal semiautomatic firearms at IWA. These are some of the coolest guns you can’t have in the US.

The release included a civilian variant of the MP-5, referred to as the SP5. Versions included a Picatinny rail as well as a fixed stock.

There was also an USC model of the UMP in .45.

Additionally, H&K displayed a G-36 version called the HK243 S SAR which comes with a folding stock. Available in Black as well as RAL8000 (Tan), they’ve also introduced a STANAG Magwell for the semi-auto rifle. The HK243 S TAR for Tactical Automatic Rifle offers a foldable and retractable stock as well as a slim line hand guard. Both models incorporate a Picatinny sight rail but the HK 243 S TAR’s slim line hand guard features a STANAG 4949 rail at the top and MIL-STD 1913 rail at the bottom as well as HKey slots. The S TAR modifications are also offered as a retrofit kit.

Finally, they had the MR223 A3 in 11″, 14.5″ and 16.5″ lengths.

Available in both Black as well as RAL8000, they feature the most modern upgrades to the HK416 including NATO STANAG 4179 (draft) Magwell, Ambidextrous Bolt Catch and Slimeline Handguard with HKey slots and STANAG 4949 rail at the top and MIL-STD 1913 rail at the bottom.

Ack! Owning MP5s, I can immediately see that pic rail is an absolute hand cutter! So close to the cocking handle like that. How typical of modern-HK to ruin their own guns!

Does give me hope for a US SP5, but ugh, that rail is bad.

    • I’m not understanding you reasoning the charging handle on a roller lock weapon like the hk5 series is non reciprocating.

    • PB says:

It’s not as bad as you think. The front of that rail is swept back at a slight angle and some of the corners have been radiused. Haven’t used it on a “K”, but it’s just fine on a regular MP5.

As an SP89 owner I hope to never see these in the US. I’m going to buy a new truck with the proceeds from that pistol next gun scare or possibly send the kids to college.

  3. Diddler says:

Crossing my fingers that these make it in.

  4. James says:

My wet dream would be that MR223A3 upper with a chrome lined HK416 profile or slimmer barrel, readily available for purchase barrels and replacement parts from HK’s web store and an MSRP equal to the current MR556 upper.

  5. Eric says:

Hopefully HK can find the right formula to get ATF approval with the pistol import scoring scheme and simulaneously get BAFA approval for export from Germany. Apparently the export permit is the issue with the 243/G36 civilian version. The egregious “sporting clause” is probably little help as well.

  6. Kevin says:

So HK is actually planning on finally selling SA only MP5s in the US and making oodles of money? That would be very cool.

  7. majrod says:

Not sure but I think the Germans can’t have these either. Their gun laws are insane.

    • SSD says:

Their gun laws aren’t as insane as you’d think. They can own these and now they can purchase Suppressors over the counter.

  8. reverend says:

Is H&K finally going to sell high cap mags to the public now? That was the main reason of avoiding them. They were hesitant of selling proprietary high caps to the Civy market, due to LEO contracts.

  9. No full auto airsoft guns (and I’ve read something about not being allowed tactical lights or lasers etc?) but they can have these… very strange.

Not a bad thing at all, just weird. Makes as much sense on the french restrictions on respirators and body armour for civilians.

  10. BAP45 says:

I know I’m late to the tread but why are the rails different on top and bottom? Some kind of compatibility I’m guessing?

  11. Pegasus1 says:

If they can make these, then they should be able to make HK-91’s again…;+)

  12. Mr Southern Warrior says:

All who think negative of the MP5, must’ve never shot one! It is/was the best shooting SBR/CQB rifle ever!!
