Field Gourmet – MRE Key

20120317-214452.jpg

Taking inspiration from a toothpaste tube, TheEpicenter.com designed this stainless steel key. Much like the keys used on old tinned meats, you attach the slot over the end of the MRE retort pouch and simply twist in order to push the food to the top. Made in Eugene, Oregon. The hole fits key chains or carabiners up to 8 mm.

Thank you for bringing that to our attention! That website is a one stop ration shop, and pricing seems OK.

That’s why I love SSD, you show such cool things that we might not otherwise find.

Not to be one to step on someones product that they are getting into the market but you guys know that you can use your knife to open the pouches up along the sides right? Never had to “brown bag” it and found myself trying to take my time to make a dining experience out of it so my method may be too dusty knuckled for some. Either way, it is a smart way to “get it all.”

Does anyone still open the bags from the top? Yeah, they do have the handy notches to tear the bag open, and the spoons are longer now, but I have always taken my knife to slice down the length of the bag and eat it that way. It makes it easier to even apply hot sauce or other condiments and you don’t get food all over the spoon handle. I’m thinking the MRE key is a solution to a long ago solved problem.

I’ll eat it, but I’m not stick’n my poor knife in there

Anybody old enough to remember the old dark green bag MREs with the dehydrated meat puck thingys you couldn’t eat before flight?
