Softshell Tech – Sphinx Giveaway

This is the second of four articles sponsored by Arc’teryx LEAF to educate readers on softshell fabrics used in their garments. In the last article we covered Tweave, a product of Gehring Textiles. What better way to learn about how Arc’teryx combines world class design and materials like Tweave Durastretch and Durastretch LT than to actually wear them? So, this time we are going to give away a set of Sphinx Halfshell and Pant.

The Sphinx Halfshell combines both weights of Tweave Durastretch. It is an armor compatible design that features articulated arms with roll up sleeves that stow for a short-sleeve option. A mandarin collar and bicep pockets top this technical version of a combat shirt off. The Sphinx pant also features softshell construction and an articulated fit for comfort and mobility. These pants are designed to be worn over the top of hiking and mountaineering boots so they incorporate an internal gaiter. The Sphinx pant also includes a knife/tool loop as well as an ingenious reinforced knee construction with an internal pocket for hardshell kneepads which allows you to still use the kneepads’ straps for added stability.

For your chance to win, in the comments section of this posting on SSD, tell us what product you’d like to see Arc’teryx develop. Use your real email address to enter because that is how you will be contacted in case you win. You posting may have to be approved so be patient of it doesn’t show right up. Only one entry per email address. The contest closes at 1200 GMT, 27 April, 2012. At that point, SSD will randomly draw a winner from the entries. We will then pass the name and email address of the winner to the Arc’teryx LEAF team and they will contact the winner and arrange shipment.

Void where prohibited.

I’d like to see a.duty uniform and duty 3 in 1 jacket.

  2. Blake says:

I would like to see them offer some of there popular tops & jackets in long sizes. I think its an area that is under served.

  3. Patrick says:

I’d like to see light weight shells and convertible lengths for pants and sleeves.

  4. Alan says:

i would like to see combination of gore/tex shell jacket and softshell/fleece liner , example: alpha jacket with removable fleece or softshell liner.
    and definitely more colors.

  5. Jay says:

Have to agree with others to add foliage green.

  6. Patrick J says:

I would like to see a concealment jacket similar to the one available from glockstore but with the superior tweave durastretch fabric and maybe the addition of a removable hood and liner.

  7. Dale H says:

I’d like to see the Alpha LT in Wolf, a Naga hoody without the hood (basically an updated RHO AR), And Talos pants in crocodile and ranger/OD Green.

  8. Josh Whaley says:

I thought some separate leg straps to make the riggers into a full harness when you need it would be interesting. Maybe a softshell boonie hat for guys that dont like hoods or rain.

  9. Sgt Swat says:

I’d like to see em take over USMC uniform production. The plain nyco uniforms aren’t fitting of a hard-core modern killing force like the Marine Corps. Better uniforms exist, we deserve them.

  10. Roy says:

It is a very nice Outfit. I am looking for an good multicam for ages.

  11. Mika says:

Been looking at the crocodile Naga Hoodie, I would love to see it with camo patters; multicam preferably.

  12. Jim says:

Some way to integrate low-vis gear carrying into their jackets.

  13. Christopher Allisob says:

I would like to see them develop a boot.

  14. Chris says:

I would like to see a ALPHA jacket in Wolf color, or a Naga hoodie in black.

  15. Lee says:

I would like to see 100% of the fabric of the Sphinx Halfshell to be the camouflage pattern.

  16. Logan says:

id like to see the naga hoodie in black and in multicam. and more products in wolf

  17. Thomas Hagan says:

I’d like to see a front opening hooded softshell.

  18. Joachim says:

I would like to see a thinner version of the Tactician AR Glove. The Tactician AR works great for crew-served weapons but I would like a thinner version for operating rifles/pistols.

Keep making products to the same level of quality you do today !

  19. Marmatt says:

Packs. Bring back the Charlie (USMC 3 day assault) in a slick, non-Molle, version. Fantastic pack, but a more grey man version would be nice.

Gaiters. A subdued or MC printed gaiter with field replaceable underfoot strap and reinforced zig-zag stitch Velcro closure.

A modular, scalable integrated harness system that was blended or sewn into pants. With leg loops woven into the pants, the rigger’s or pistol belt could be used with or without depending on need for safety tether or full load-bearing capability.

  20. Brandon Gentert says:

I like the idea of socks. I’m always looking for a good pair of socks. They need to be over the calf and stay that way. Of course any of your products in OD green looks great too.

  21. Duke says:

Talos uniform in Croc would be superb, perhaps also Ranger Green. Unlined Technician gloves (Basically the leather gloves, minus any insulation), -and the Rampart/Spotter and Raider pants incorporated and modified for the LEAF line -like the Combat pants… or just bring back the Combat pants. 🙂

  22. Alex says:

I would like to see more products available in Wolf color. Also, having a technical shell / warm liner combo would be great!

  23. Richard Christopher says:

I know they do cammo but it would be nice to see a uniform shirt in LAPD blue but with a regular collar simlar in design to the give away shirt. More and more departments are going to the shirt vest( read load carring and bullet proof) vice the under the shirt. The design and material of the the shirt lends itself well to this type of vest.
Also the trousers would be great for those working in wet/cold climates

  24. Andrew says:

I’d like to see Arcteryx apply some of theur material and manufacturing techniques to other load carriage equipment besides packs.

  25. Andy Peterson says:

A simple yet inexpensive athletic ‘hoodie’. Something for lounging and repping the brand and material.

  26. Stephen says:

I would like to see an expansion of options in the LEAF category of “Men’s Shirts/Tops / Light/Athletic” – aside from just the Chimera shirt (which I love!) – to include durable/functional shortsleeve options and styles that “blend” a bit better for low-vis operations. I also agree with other posts about opening a “conceal carry” line – looks like Under Armour may even get into that market!

  27. Jeff Scott says:

With all of there high tech clothing, would love to see them branch out to the gear market. Lightweight yet durable pc’s, vests etc.

  28. Andy says:

I would love to see Arc’teryx develop some LCE/ Chest Rigs, and a uniform compliant combat boot.

  29. Matt says:

More color options and Jackets for the LE market. Specifically Duty Jacket height jackets for ease of wear with a Duty Belt.

  30. Mason Carr says:

I would love to see this set of clothing in the new Wolf pattern.

  31. Ed Koehler says:

A line for hunting. I’d like to see Arc’teryx’s take on the Ghillie suit.

  32. Ipkiss says:

I’d like to see various smocks (like vertx) and body armour overgarments for foul weather (like NFM GARM).

  33. Zach M. says:

1.5 instructors belt with cobra buckle

  34. sean says:

I’d like to see more products like the combat jacket and atom Lt available in ranger green.

  35. Tyler says:

    Smock baby!

  36. Evan says:

Some quality, cheaper gear for the camping/hiking market would be appreciated. So much of this stuff is way out of reach for most of us.

  37. Mike says:

I would like to see a pair of Arc’Teryx LEAF blue jeans. Another outdoor retailer had a pair of blue jeans for awhile that incorporated a gusseted crotch and stretch denim, absolutely spectacular for plain clothes LEOs. I think Arc’Teryx could greatly improve on this design.

  38. Flapjack says:

    Elbow caps.

As I was reading everyone elses comments I realized I’d like to see their solution for load bearing gear. An Arcteryx chest rig over an Arcteryx slick armor kit might be pretty bad.

  39. Tommy Russ says:

I’d like to see them develop some footwear or boots.

  40. PistolPat says:

It would be great if we began to see the Arc’Teryx materials used in making some plate carriers or load bearing equipment.

  41. Travis says:

Glad to find a giveaway that doesn’t involve me pimping out my reputation on Facebook and having to “Like” every company separated by six degrees!

I used the Arc’teryx USMC pack (which I actually broke some of the polymer hardware holding the top lid on, my first impression of the company wasn’t awesome…though no one else managed to break their rucks…). I’ve watched them develop products over the years since then.

I’ve always wanted a zippered commando-style merino wool sweater that had a nice deep cowl-like hood. Simple but with some features but nothing that screams tactical. This would look good in the Arc’teryx civilian products side. Fits in on the streets of NYC in inclement weather, but you wouldn’t do without on a job in the shit.

  42. Jason says:

I’d like to see what Arc’teryx could do with a chest rig. And they should pick me to win, because it’s my birthday.

  43. jdawg54874 says:

    a line of anoraks

  44. Wulfi says:

I would like to see the option for Long sizes in your pants, like you have started doing with the Talos as far as I am oriented.

Also, the Sphinx top in 100% Multicam as wished by someone else.

  45. Nathan says:

I would like to see some of their day packs and larger done up for the LEAF line, Slightly heavier fabrics and subdued colors.

  46. Scott says:

I’d like to see various gear for the LE market.

  47. Ville Partanen says:

I’d like to see Arc’Teryx wind proof smock.

  48. JB says:

A larger pack with PALS on the hip belt in all Multicam would be nice.

  49. Todd says:

I would like to see a soft shell version of a British style, combat jacket/smock. High tech fabric and features (pit zips, sleeve pockets), but with traditional styling front pockets, hood etc.

  50. Justin says:

I’d like to see a camo reversible anorak. Maybe Wolf on one side, Multicam on the other.
