And Then There’s This – Ft Leonard Wood Seeks Instructor Uniforms in Crye Precision MultiCam Tropic

Fort Leonard Wood recently released a Sources Sought Notice on FedBizOpps seeking info regarding Crye Precision Field Uniforms in the MultiCam Tropic pattern. They are intended for use by “Instructors” but considering the number of schoolhouses located at Leonard Wood, your guess is as good as mine as to who is the actual user.

Two things make this interesting. First off, the calling out of the Crye Precision field uniform by name and salient characteriatics to avoid being offered a different item. The second is the pattern. The Army’s bookend tests to find suitable Desert and Woodland patterns to complememt OCP (Scorpion W2) have so far only resulted in an inconclusive interim test report. While M81 woodland remains in limited use for SOF personnel as well as at Hawaii’s Jungle School, supplies are limited. MARSOC did purchase M81 Woodland Combat Uniforms manufactured by DriFire but these did not include a Field Shirt. Regardless, someone at Ft Leonard Wood is insisting on the Crye garment in the Crye pattern and that’s interesting.

    Two possibilities
    1. The U.S. Army Sapper School is located there
    2. It could be used as the uniform for any OPFOR engagement.

And the plot thickens. I think this is for the woods bookend testing, considering the location, but why would they put an instructor label on it? Maybe they’ll be the ones wearing the new getup in testing.

In your humble opinion, what’s your take SSD?

  3. Seconded, it’s probably Sapper

  4. Jon, OPT says:

I don’t think this has anything to do with bookends. I would say it has a lot to do with instructing. The Army isn’t into writing requirements that are not concise and to the point.

Perhaps, if the MC Tropic bit works well enough, it could transition into a bookend possibility…

But I agree, this is most likely for the SAPPER cadre, so they can both look spiffy and justify it by being able to most effectively hide from and sneak up on students to ensure they don’t cheat on land nav.

  5. NORBIS says:

Isnt there a sniper course there?

    • bulldog76 says:

nope sapper ,mp and i believe chemical corps

      • Mac says:

Engineer, MP, and Chemical Schoolhouses are all at FLW.

I could just as easily see this being for the MP SRT School Instructors as I could Sapper. Unless I’m mistaken, the SRT School does run a Marksman/Observer course.

    • z0phi3l says:

Sure as heck isn’t for the Basic Drills, those guys like to stick out

  6. AbnMedOps says:

Do they run a Procurement Officer Course there?

  7. straps says:

WHOEVER is pushing the requirement, WHAT it does is get the nose under the tent.

One day, units operating in temperate climes will be wearing Tropic, units operating in arid climes will be wearing Arid.

    Anarchy, I say, ANARCHY.

    • SSD says:

      Some folks already are.

      • Jon, OPT says:

Don’t say anything! I remember there were about 4 years that some units were wearing Multicam downrange while the anti-MC crowd was whining about no “actual units” use it. I always got a silent chuckle out of that.

        Jon, OPT

  8. Riceball says:

Since we’re on the subject of Tropic possibly being tested/trialed/considered as one of the bookends, how well would it work as a M81 woodland replacement? I’d think that Tropic would be a bit too green for woodlands unless you’re talking about Canadian forests or most worlds encountered when traveling through a stargate.

I just finished phase one special reaction team at fort Leonard wood a few of the instructors wore the jungle variation multi cam both civilians

    • SSD says:

      Well, there you go.

      • ayyy says:

Haha looks pretty dumb with them wearing the top but with regular multicam bottoms

        • Bushman says:

Actually, it could make sense in some seasons like late summer and early fall, when foliage is still a kind of green, but tall grass is already dry. Not in Spring, for sure…
Nature uses this trick too, look at wolves and moose.

  10. majrod says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if the request is withdrawn shortly.

After everything that’s happened HQ Army has to have learned some lessons.

  11. 88M2P says:

Sweet! About time the cadre at the 88 Mike course got a distinct uniform. They are, after all, (Motor Vehicle) Operators.
