ADS Federal Range Day – Garmin fenix 3

Garmin has released the latest version of their wristmounted GPS. The fenix 3 features one major improvement in my opinion and that is the integration of Russian GLONASS signals to GPS. This means you’ve got access to two separate satellite constellations.

-Stainless Steel EXO antenna with GPS + GLONASS support for fast fix and accuracy
-1.2-inch sunlight readable color Chroma display
-Fitness training features like VO2 Max and Recovery Advisor (when used with a heart rate monitor¹)
-Outdoor navigation features like 3-axis compass, altimeter and barometer, TracBack and Sight’n Go
-Connect IQ compatibility for customized apps, widgets, watch faces and data
-Rechargable Lithium-Ion battery: Up to 50 hours in UltraTrac mode; up to 20 hours in GPS training mode; up to 6 weeks in watch mode
Water rated to 100m

fenix 3 is available in 3 models: gray with high-strength, scratch resistant, crystal and black band; silver with red band; and the premium sapphire model with a stainless steel band and sapphire lens.

I recently acquired the fenix 3 sapphire, and as a watch enthusiast, I haven’t taken it off since. I love the style and the black stainless band which has a substantial feel. It comes with the rubber strap if you want to go lighter. I also have the heart rate monitor which is great and has been helping me with my workouts. I’m looking forward to testing more of the outdoor related features when I visit AZ as I am mostly in a city environment. I also recommend using openstreetmaps for Basecamp as a free option for installation. The web based software for syncing your daily activity is great (in “modern” mode) and it also integrates nicely with myfitnesspal.com. View text messages and calendar with mobile device sync as well as control music and view weather in addition to the ABC GPS features. Garmin really hit it out of the park for me and I have yet to get anything less than a very positive reaction from it and more importantly it’s been helping me get healthier.

I got the original Fenix a couple years ago, and watched it evolve through software upgrades. Good stuff. I really want this one. It gives the Suunto Ambit a run for its money.

Oh and Joe Strohman is The Man! I’ve gotten several products from him, including Garmin and Aimpro toys.
