SIG SAUER - Never Settle

A Quick Nap

This photo from the Panama invasion depicts a US SOF Soldier getting some rest during a lull in the fighting. Love the Colt carbine with the massive flashlight attached to the handguard and the optic mounted to the carrying handle.

Very cool pic. I believe that’s a Colt 723 with an Aimpoint 3000 and a SCUBA flashlight attached. I carried one in 2/75 with a filtered Maglite. I disliked the aimpoint at the time and ran it with iron sights.

      KW,

I’d love to see photos of your rifle with the Maglite setup. If you have any, please let me know how I can get a hold of you.

      Thanks
      Earl

I have seen that pic before and it was captioned as a “Unit” soldier. Good pic!

    Wasted away again in Margaritaville,
looking for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people say there’s a woman to blame, but I know…
    It’s Noriega’s fault

My Colt during OJC had a mini-mag light 100 MPH taped to the carry handle. That dudes set up would have been an uprade! The mini-mag barely threw the beam past the end of the barrel.

Is that a Thermarest on his pack? If so, I had no idea they dated back that far.

    • SSD says:

      I noticed that too.

    • JKifer says:

      sure looks like it

We had the OD green, self-inflating Thermarest mattresses in ’87. My NG SF unit did a group buy. It was full length, just a standard pad, with an OD green stuff sack. I still have it, and it still holds air. It saw a lot of use and was a good substitute for the issued pad.

Back in 88 I bought the lightweight Thermarest in Rust color -at the Sports store on Leighton Kaserne and used black marking ink to break up the rust color. When I got to 3rd Group in 90 the Group CIF issued these squishy Black foam pads that everyone folded flat and carried in the open space of the ALICE frame or folded flat in the top flap straps of the pack.

        • MB says:

Some of the guys in the company had those squishy pads. I don’t remember ever seeing anyone use the issue pad in that company I was in then.

        • MB says:

Were you still in 3RD Group in 1991? We were activated/mobilized for Desert Storm and went to Bragg in February 91 and stayed until June.
