With what looks like an 8 inch blade I have my doubts this was made for the Air Force.
Knowing the cost of Winkler stuff it was probably a run just for the SERE cats at the school house.
Came from STS… designed for multiple uses other than just SERE. Flat edge and hammering point can be used in SSE getting things pried open /improvised breaching tool for a majority of standard wood doors you find. Not designed for extrication purposes though. Also designed with or without serrations. Wanted to breach a gap between a machete and a hatchet so you have a blade length to use and leverage to chop.
More like a very neiche aircraft escape tool.
Nothing about this knife lends itself to “survival” once you have escaped your cabin.
I dunno…compared to the current knife, this looks more useful for important tasks like: chopping through ice for water; cutting igloo blocks; digging; chopping/splitting/scraping/planing wood; hacking through vegetation; even chopping or slashing an animal or enemy.
I like this design, it has a lot of good features to escape an aircraft. It would compliment the aircraft crash axes in an emergency too. This design reminds me of the DeWalt Side Strike Chisel.
I can see the similarity in design to the old red handled survival saws they used to put in our survival kits. But where’s the snow shovel blade?
