USAF Issues Updated AFI 36-2903 Dress and Personal Appearance of Air Force Personnel

The Air Force has updated AFI 36-2903, dated 7 Feb 2020. The biggest change is dealing with beards. Don’t get too excited. They are still only authorized for medical or religious accommodation. It’s just that now, there is guidance on how they should look.

A major oversight is that the new AFSC Special Reconnaissance has been left out of the AFI. Technically, they are no longer authorized a beret. Weather Parachutists however, are still authorized to wear the Grey beret.

Canadian Military Members can have beards and pony tails IAW national policies.

Cannabis is legal to consume in Canada. The Canadian Armed Forces has policies in place to govern members usage.

When you have a generation of privates that have all grown up getting high on the weekends, a recruiters job becomes impossible…

Interesting that the beard photo shows a beard length well under the allowed 2 inches.

“Beards (which include facial and neck hair) must be maintained to a length not to exceed 2 inches when measured from the bottom of the chin.”

Shaving waivers are limited to 1/4 inch.

At least it is good to know that the boys from AFSC Special Reconnaissance
can still wear Turbans since Berets are now a no go for them.

If its ok for some, then it should be ok for all…unless we’re saying that our Sikh and Norse service members are acceptable losses because all the safety excuses for not having a beard are actually legitimate.

Sooooooo….religious accommodation for select groups of people, eh?? If a Christian or a Jew were to wear a religious display such as a crucifix or Star of David outside of the uniform, then that person would be OUT of uniform. Only select members of religious faiths are allowed to wear beards?? (barring a specific medical condition, of course). Isn’t that discrimination against other male military members? As a USAF veteran, I object to this nonsense. Religion should never be an influencing factor on the military dress code.
